The show’s title, ‘Sunim Sonim Soul Trip in India’, combines ‘Sunim,’ meaning a Buddhist monk, and ‘sonim,’ meaning a guest. It will centre on Venerable Pomnyun Sunim and a segment of his 34-year pilgrimage across India’s sacred sites. Widely known as ‘the nation’s mentor’ and one of Korea’s most influential Buddhist figures, he makes his first-ever variety show appearance, offering audiences a chance to see a more relaxed and personal side of him.
Joining the journey are several well-known figures from the Korean entertainment industry. Lee Joo Bin even canceled a trip to New York to participate in the show. Together, they will embark on a vibrant and unpredictable journey, riding rickshaws, sampling street food, and immersing themselves in the local culture.
The show promises to showcase parts of India that aren’t often seen on TV, including the tributaries of the Ganges River, busy market alleys, and even a school in a remote area that Venerable Pomnyun Sunim started 34 years ago. Through these experiences, the monk shows a real human side of himself, even humorously saying, “Variety shows are harder than spiritual practice.”
‘Sunim Sonim Soul Trip in India’ is set to premiere this May on SBS.
