Netflix Declares ‘Resident Playbook’ as ‘Limited Series’ Despite Strong Global Performance.
Netflix has officially classified ‘Resident Playbook’, a spinoff of the popular medical drama ‘Hospital Playlist’, as a ‘limited series’, indicating that its 12-episode run will not be extended. Fans, who were awaiting news of a second season renewal, were met with disappointment following Netflix’s labeling. Although there has been no official word from tvN, Netflix’s move makes it clear that a sequel is unlikely.
Starring Go Youn Jung, Shin Si Ah, Han Ye Ji, Kang You Seok, and Jung Joon Won, ‘Resident Playbook’ centers on four newly graduated interns who join the obstetrics and gynecology department at Yulje Hospital, a field that is often at the heart of heated debates in South Korea’s medical community. Set against the backdrop of the country’s plummeting birth rate, which makes new recruits difficult to find, the drama explores how these first-year residents tackle emergencies, voice their opinions, wrestle with the urge to quit, and resist conforming to the relentless hustle culture that defines their profession.
Notably, ‘Resident Playbook’ has recorded approximately 2.8 million views in just one week, ranking among the top three on Netflix’s global non-English TV series chart. It also topped the streaming charts in 6 countries, including India, and placed within the top 10 in more than 14 countries worldwide.
Netflix’s decision to make the series a limited series is surprising, especially considering the show’s recent success. The fourth episode of ‘Resident Playbook’ achieved its highest nationwide rating yet, reaching 5.1 percent. With no official word from tvN regarding the future of the series or whether new seasons are planned, fans are left uncertain about what’s next.
