Ahead of the 76th UN General Assembly, K-Pop fans all over the globe were delighted when the United Nations Secretary-General appointed the popular K-Pop girl group BLACKPINK as an Advocate for the upcoming Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
The Sustainable Development Goals focus on 17 different goals which include critical issues and have been agreed on by the UN’s 193 Member States in 2015. During the appointment the Secretary General focused on how the Advocates would play their part by using their sphere of influence to reach new constituencies in order to take action to sustain a greener and safer world.
This appointment marks BLACKPINK as the first Asian Artist to be selected as an Advocate for the SDGs. As a reply to being appointed as an Advocate the group said,
We truly believe in the importance of collective action. We will only be able to make a difference when we come together, for the good of everyone. Now is the time to act for a safer tomorrow and a better future.
The group, selected after a rigorous process, received a letter signed by the Secretary-General and decided to participate in the Nobel purpose of bringing a positive change in the world. In reply to this the girls thanked their fandom ‘Blink’ while mentioning how honored they were to be a part of this and would contribute to this cause.
The current Advocates include Heads of State such as Prime Ministers, Presidents, and Queens along with various global leaders and world-class artists. The group would be carrying out their activities along with them conveying a solid message to the world while encouraging everyone to participate in achieving the UN SDGs.
BLACKPINK debuted in August 2016 with their single album ‘Square One’ which included hits like ‘Whistle’ and ‘Boombayah.’ Along with their popular songs, the group also became the first female K-Pop artists to be inhibited to perform at Coachella, the largest music festival in US in 2019.
The group became the first K-Pop girl group to surpass 1.3 million in album sales along with their YouTube channel surpassing 65 million subscribers making them the most subscribed artist on the platform.
Previously the group was appointed as Advocates for the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26) in early 2020.
