K-Drama Recommendation of the Week: ‘The Uncanny Counter’ – A Thrilling Superhero Story

Welcome to ‘The Uncanny Counter’, the 2020 OCN action-fantasy thriller that became a cultural phenomenon. Based on the hit Kakao Webtoon ‘Amazing Rumor’ by Jang Yi, the series stars Cho Byeong-kyu, Yu Jun-sang, Kim Se-jeong, and Yeom Hye-ran in a story about second chances, found family, and fighting evil—one spirit at a time.

Based on: Webtoon ‘Amazing Rumor’ by Jang Yi

Episodes:  16

Network: OCN

Where to Watch:  Netflix

The Plot

7 Life Lessons From The Uncanny Counter Including Standing By Your Friends & Treating Others With Kindness - ZULA.sg

So Mun (Cho Byeong-kyu) is a high school student who dreams of walking without a cane. After a mysterious accident left him with a leg disability, he spends his days helping his parents at their noodle restaurant, often feeling like an outsider in his own body.

Then everything changes. He is recruited into the Counters, a secret group of paranormal hunters who track down and fight evil spirits that escape from the afterlife to prey on humans. Each Counter was once on the brink of death and given a second chance at life in exchange for hunting evil. Now, Mun must learn to harness his newfound powers, confront terrifying spirits, and discover what it truly means to be a hero—not despite his disability, but because of the strength he found within it.

Alongside his new family—the fierce Choo Mae-ok (Yeom Hye-ran), the gentle giant Ga Mo-tak (Yu Jun-sang), the kind-hearted Do Ha-na (Kim Se-jeong), and their mysterious leader Choi Jang-mul (Ahn Suk-hwan)—Mun fights to protect the innocent while uncovering dark secrets about his own past that could destroy them all.

The Characters

So Mun (Played by Cho Byeong-kyu)

So Mun is a high school student with a leg disability who becomes the newest Counter. Cho Byeong-kyu delivers a breakout performance as Mun, whose journey from an insecure outsider to a confident hero forms the emotional core of the series. His ability to connect with both spirits and people sets him apart, proving that true strength comes from empathy, not just power.

Ga Mo-tak (Played by Yu Jun-sang)

Ga Mo-tak is a former detective who lost his memories in a traumatic incident. Gruff, powerful, and fiercely protective, he physically leads the Counters in battle. Yu Jun-sang brings depth and vulnerability to a man haunted by a past he cannot remember and a guilt he cannot shake.

Do Ha-na (Played by Kim Se-jeong)

Do Ha-na is a Counter with the ability to read memories through physical touch. Cold and distant on the surface, she hides a traumatic past that slowly unravels as the series progresses. Kim Se-jeong shines in a role that demands both fierce action and quiet emotional turmoil, proving her range beyond her idol persona.

Choo Mae-ok (Played by Yeom Hye-ran)

Choo Mae-ok is the warm-hearted, no-nonsense matriarch of the Counters who runs their noodle restaurant cover. Yeom Hye-ran brings both humor and gravitas to Mae-ok, balancing motherly care with ruthless efficiency in battle. Her secret connection to Mun’s past adds layers of mystery and heart.

Why This Drama is Your Next Binge-Watch

  • A Superhero Story with Heart – Unlike many Western superhero dramas, ‘The Uncanny Counter’ focuses on ordinary people given extraordinary second chances. Their powers come from their pain, and their strength comes from the bond they share with one another.
  • Cho Byeong-kyu’s Breakout Role – Before the controversies surrounding his career, Cho Byeong-kyu delivered a genuinely moving performance as So Mun, capturing the frustration of disability, the thrill of newfound power, and the ache of grief with remarkable nuance.
  • Found Family at Its Finest – The Counters argue, bicker, and get on each other’s nerves, but they would die for one another. Their chemistry transforms a supernatural action drama into a touching story about family.
  • Grounded Action and Unique Powers – Each Counter has distinct abilities—such as psychometry, enhanced strength, and healing—and their battles against creative, terrifying spirits are both thrilling and emotionally resonant.
  • Villains You’ll Love to Hate – The main antagonist, a Level 3 evil spirit capable of possessing multiple bodies, creates genuine tension and high stakes throughout all 16 episodes.
  • A Global Hit on Netflix – One of the first K-dramas to gain massive international popularity on Netflix, ‘The Uncanny Counter’ proved that superhero stories truly have no borders.

A Deeper Look

At its core, ‘The Uncanny Counter’ is a story about second chances, found family, and the healing power of connection. Each Counter is broken in their own way, haunted by loss, guilt, or trauma, and their battle against evil spirits becomes a metaphor for confronting inner demons.

The drama also thoughtfully portrays disability through So Mun’s character. His leg injury doesn’t define him, but it shapes him. His strength comes not from walking without a cane, but from the resilience he built while using one. It’s a refreshing, nuanced depiction rarely seen in mainstream action dramas.

Additionally, the series explores themes of grief, justice, and what it means to truly live. The evil spirits prey on human weakness, but the Counters fight because they understand weakness intimately. They’re not perfect heroes—they’re survivors.

The Final Verdict

While the CGI occasionally shows its budget constraints and the pacing dips slightly in the middle episodes, ‘The Uncanny Counter’ remains one of the most emotionally satisfying action-fantasy K-dramas ever produced. With its lovable found family, genuinely moving character arcs, and thrilling spirit battles, it’s easy to see why it became a global sensation.

A disabled high school student who becomes a demon hunter. A memory-loss detective fighting ghosts and guilt. A noodle shop that hides Korea’s last line of defense against evil. Your next obsession is waiting.
