The recently released Bollywood movie ‘Saiyaara’ is sparking comparisons to the 2004 Korean film ‘A Moment To Remember’.
Released on July 18, Mohit Suri’s ‘Saiyaara’ won people over with its emotional storytelling and heartfelt performances by lead actors Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda. However, K-drama and K-movie fans were quick to point out the film’s striking similarities to the Korean classic ‘A Moment To Remember’, directed by John H. Lee and starring Jung Woo Sung and Son Ye Jin.
‘Saiyaara’ tells the story of a young couple, passionate musician Krish Kapur and aspiring journalist Vaani. When Vaani is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s, their lives take an unexpected turn. The plot closely mirrors ‘A Moment To Remember’, where Su Jin (Son Ye Jin) and Chul Soo’s (Jung Woo Sung) relationship is tested after Su Jin receives the same diagnosis and begins losing her memories.
While many viewers noted the clear parallels between the two films, others argue that ‘Saiyaara’ is only loosely inspired by the Korean version, with the resemblance largely ending at the Alzheimer’s storyline. So far, the filmmakers have not confirmed whether ‘Saiyaara’ is an official adaptation or remake of ‘A Moment To Remember’.
Notably, Mohit Suri’s past work has also drawn inspiration from Korean films and dramas. ‘Murder 2’ took cues from ‘The Chaser’, ‘Awarapan’ had shades of ‘A Bittersweet Life’, ‘Zehar’ felt similar to ‘The Truth About Love’, and even ‘Ek Villain’ seemed influenced by ‘I Saw the Devil’.
