‘HOME’ Review: A Story of Becoming by BOYNEXTDOOR

There comes a point in every group’s career when they have to face a difficult question: once the excitement of debut fades, who they truly are?

For BOYNEXTDOOR, a six-member group consisting of Jaehyun, Taesan, Leehan, Sungho, Riwoo, and Woonhak under KOZ Entertainment, ‘HOME’ feels like their answer.

Released as the group’s first full-length studio album on June 8, ‘HOME’ places less emphasis on building a fictional universe and more on documenting real experiences. While many third-year group music may focus on producing commercial tracks or continuing to build on the group’s concept to maintain momentum, BOYNEXTDOOR presented something much more intimate.

The album is packed with stories of different emotions and the effort of years spent chasing a goal in an uncertain field. Instead of asking where home is, the album describes home as the people, places, and surroundings that helped them throughout their journey of ups and downs.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of ‘HOME’ is the creative involvement behind it. With members participating in songwriting and composing tracks on the album, combined with guidance of executive producer Zico and producers Pop Time and Kako, the group’s first full-length studio album feels like a personal journey shared by six individuals who come together with different stories but with the same dream, highlighting the group’s growth with each comeback and their desire to improve.

Let’s break down each track and take a closer look at the story behind them.

‘06070’

Most albums begin with a statement. ‘06070’ begins by looking back at memories.

Serving as the album’s heartwarming opener, the track quietly establishes the foundation of ‘HOME’. All the members participated in writing the lyrics, while Jaehyun and Woonhak also took part in composing it.

What makes ‘06070’ particularly effective is its placement. The song reminds listeners that behind every achievement lies a period of uncertainty. The number ‘06070’ is the postal code of KOZ’s original office building, where it all started—a place that has witnessed all the members’ emotions, as well as their greed and determination to prove themselves and showcase it to the world, giving the rest of the album greater emotional weight.

‘VIRAL’

If ‘06070’ is the album looking backward, ‘VIRAL’ is BOYNEXTDOOR looking forward.

The title track bursts open with powerful choreography, layered production, and some of the album’s most ambitious songwriting. During promotions, Jaehyun, who contributed as a writer, and Woonhak, who also worked on the composition, described the track as refreshingly different because of its longer runtime and more thought-provoking lyrical approach.

The music video complements the song’s energy with powerful choreography, fast-paced editing, and performance-focused visuals. Rather than following a complex storyline, it highlights the members’ charisma, synchronization, and confidence, reinforcing the song’s themes of growth and ambition.

On the surface, the song embraces the excitement of spreading influence and reaching larger audiences. Underneath that, however, lies a deeper desire to leave a lasting impression. This combination of accessibility and substance is what makes ‘VIRAL’ the title track of the album.

‘똑똑똑 (ddok ddok ddok)’

Among all the tracks on ‘HOME’, ‘ddok ddok ddok’ may be the most clever conceptually.

The hip-hop pre-release track tells the story of six unexpected visitors arriving everywhere without warning, inspired by doorbells and knocking sounds. With the lyric, “Knock, knock, knock, BND coming at your door,” the group portrays themselves as uninvited guests who create their own opportunities and chances.

Members Taesan, Jaehyun, and Woonhak participated in writing and composing the track alongside renowned producers and songwriters Lil Moshpit, PENOMECO, and Zico, as well as other composers and writers.

The music video carries the track’s hip-hop vibe with a cinematic and edgy color aesthetic, contrasting with the group’s usual bright and cheerful energy, while featuring addictive choreography.

‘ADIOS!’

Every album needs a turning point, and ‘ADIOS!’ serves exactly that purpose.

Driven by explosive drumming and relentless guitar riffs, the song arrives with a burst of energy just as the album risks becoming too reflective. According to Riwoo, the track embodies the group’s playful and free-spirited identity, making it one of the songs that most clearly captures what BOYNEXTDOOR sounds like at their core.

What makes ‘ADIOS!’ stand out is its emotional perspective. Rather than treating goodbyes as moments of sadness, the song views them as opportunities for growth. Taesan, Jaehyun, and Woonhak contributed to the track’s songwriting and composition, helping shape its uplifting message. It transforms frustration into momentum, turning what could have been a melancholy track into one of the album’s most liberating experiences.

‘Upside Down’

If ‘ADIOS!’ provides release, ‘Upside Down’ provides freedom.

Built around a bright, swing-inspired melody, the song explores a deceptively simple question: what if today were your last day? Instead of approaching that idea with fear, BOYNEXTDOOR responds with optimism, encouraging listeners to live without regret. Members Taesan, Jaehyun, Riwoo, Leehan, and Woonhak took part in the track’s creation, adding to its personal and uplifting message.

Leehan described it as his favorite genre on the album, and it is easy to understand why. The track captures a side of BOYNEXTDOOR that fans have loved since debut—carefree, energetic, and full of personality. It is one of the album’s most enjoyable moments and a reminder that growing up does not necessarily mean losing one’s sense of fun.

‘DIVE’

One of the album’s most immersive tracks, ‘DIVE’ shifts the focus inward.

Engineered with underwater-inspired sound effects and layered production, the song attempts to recreate the sensation of falling deeply in love. Instead of telling listeners what that feeling is like, the production allows them to experience it. Taesan, Jaehyun, and Woonhak contributed to the track, helping shape its emotional and atmospheric sound.

This is where ‘HOME’ becomes particularly interesting as a listening experience. While many tracks rely on narrative storytelling, ‘DIVE’ communicates primarily through atmosphere. Every instrumental choice serves the song’s central idea, creating a track that feels less like a confession and more like an emotional environment, with lyrics such as “I just want to stop drifting without you” and “I just want to stop sinking alone.”

‘Forever You (기억해줘요)’

If there is one song likely to leave a lasting impact on listeners, it is ‘Forever You’.

Presented as a letter to the members’ parents, the track strips away much of the album’s production and places the focus entirely on emotion. During interviews, Sungho revealed that while working on the song, the members shared personal childhood memories and stories they had never told one another before. That detail changes the listening experience entirely.

Suddenly, ‘Forever You’ is no longer just another emotional ballad. It becomes a conversation between six sons and the people who helped shape them. The simplicity of the piano-driven arrangement allows those emotions to remain at the center, creating one of the album’s most sincere and vulnerable moments.

‘I Wonder’

As the album approaches its conclusion, ‘I Wonder’ shifts its focus toward fans, a track written by BOYNEXTDOOR for ONEDOOR.

Fan-dedicated songs are common in K-pop, yet ‘I Wonder’ avoids many of the clichés associated with the format. Instead of relying solely on gratitude, the song reflects on memories, shared experiences, the anxiety that comes with cherishing something precious, and the passage of time.

The result is a track that feels reflective rather than sentimental. It acknowledges the relationship between artist and fan while emphasizing the moments they have experienced together. In many ways, it functions as the emotional summary of the entire album.

‘I Wonder, Always’

Exclusive to the physical album, ‘I Wonder, Always’ acts as a six minute continuation rather than a bonus track. It extends the conversation with ONEDOOR, expressing hope that the connection between artist and fan will continue to grow in the future.

As a closing track, it succeeds because it understands the album’s central message: home is not a destination. It is something built through people, memories, and shared experiences.

Conclusion

Image

What ultimately makes ‘HOME’ successful is its balance. The album never becomes overwhelmingly sentimental, yet it remains deeply emotional. It embraces nostalgia without becoming trapped by it and presents personal stories without losing their universal appeal. More importantly, it demonstrates BOYNEXTDOOR’s growth not only as performers but as storytellers.

An album created with love, memories, anxiety about the future, a desire to prove themselves, while also expressing gratitude to the people who were, are, and will always be by their side.
