What’s Your MBTI? The Personality Trend That Swept South Korea

Why Is Everyone in South Korea Talking About MBTI?

Imagine meeting someone for the first time and being asked, “What’s your MBTI?” In South Korea, this question has become increasingly common, especially among youngsters. What started as a personality test has grown into a cultural trend, shaping the way people talk about themselves and understand others. Today, MBTI has found its way into friendships, social media, dating, and even the entertainment industry.

So, what is MBTI?

MBTI stands for Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. It is a personality assessment that categorizes people into 16 personality types based on four pairs of preferences: Extraversion (E) or Introversion (I), Sensing (S) or Intuition (N), Thinking (T) or Feeling (F), and Judging (J) or Perceiving (P). These preferences describe how people tend to direct their energy, take in information, make decisions, and approach the world around them. Some of the most common types are INFP, ENFP, INTJ, and ESFJ.

For example, people with the INFP personality type are often described as creative, thoughtful, and guided by their values. ENFPs are usually energetic, curious, and enthusiastic. INTJs are known for being independent and strategic thinkers, while ESFJs are often friendly, caring, and sociable.

However, MBTI should not be treated as a fixed label or a complete description of someone’s personality. The assessment focuses on specific personality preferences rather than every aspect of who a person is. Results can also vary when someone retakes the assessment, particularly when one or more of their preferences are less clear.

Why Did MBTI Become So Popular in South Korea?

One of the main reasons is that many young people are interested in self-discovery. They want to understand themselves better and learn about their strengths and weaknesses. MBTI offers a simple and enjoyable way to explore their personalities.

Another reason is that MBTI makes conversations more interesting. Instead of talking only about school, work, or hobbies, people can discuss their personality types and compare their traits. This has made MBTI a popular topic among friends and classmates.

MBTI And Social Media

Social media has played a major role in the popularity of MBTI. Social media platforms are filled with personality quizzes, memes, videos, and posts about different MBTI types. Many people enjoy reading personality descriptions and sharing them online.

As a result, MBTI has become more than just a test. It has become part of everyday online culture in South Korea.

MBTI And Dating Culture

MBTI has also become popular in dating culture. Many people use personality types to understand communication styles and relationship compatibility. While MBTI cannot predict whether a relationship will be successful, many people enjoy using it as a fun way to start conversations and learn more about someone they have just met.

For some, asking about a potential partner’s MBTI type has become an easy way to find common interests and discuss differences in personality. It can also give people something lighthearted to talk about when getting to know each other.

Is MBTI Always Accurate?

Although MBTI is widely loved, it does not provide a complete picture of a person’s personality. Human personalities are complex and cannot be fully described by sixteen categories. People also have different experiences and circumstances that can influence how they express their personality.

For this reason, MBTI can be viewed as a tool for self-reflection rather than a complete description of a person’s identity. Even the official MBTI guidelines caution against using type as a fixed label or assuming that everyone with the same type will behave in exactly the same way.

From social media and friendships to K-pop and dating culture, MBTI has become a familiar part of modern South Korean society. It gives people a fun and easy way to learn about themselves and connect with others. Whether used for entertainment or self-discovery, MBTI continues to shape conversations across South Korea and remains a fascinating cultural trend.
