Veteran South Korean actress Lee Joo Shil passed away at the age of 81 after a battle with cancer.
On February 2, her agency confirmed, “Actress Lee Joo Shil passed away on the morning of this day.” They further added, “Approximately three months ago, actress Lee Joo Shil’s health declined, and she was diagnosed with stomach cancer after an examination from the hospital.” The actress had been diagnosed with breast cancer back in 1993 and had successfully recovered after over 10 years.
The veteran actress was diagnosed with stomach cancer three months ago and admitted to a hospital in Uijeongbu earlier in the day after suffering cardiac arrest. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Lee Joo Shil debuted as a theatrical actress in 1965 and went on to star in various acclaimed productions. Despite her health challenges, the actress remained active in her career, even expanding to television and films. She is known for her roles in ‘Train to Busan’ (2016), ‘The Uncanny Counter’ (2020), and most recently, ‘Squid Game 2’ (2024) as Hwang Jun Ho’s (Wi Ha Joon) mother.
Her funeral service will be held on February 5 at Severance Hospital in Sinchon, Seoul.
