Achieving success in any music industry is difficult. Yet, as K-pop rose to international fame—especially through groups like BTS and BLACKPINK—countless fans began to picture themselves living that glamorous K-pop idol life.
Usually, the top three entertainment agencies in South Korea—though HYBE’s rapid growth has positioned it as a powerful fourth force—are known for recruiting and training idols. However, many of the idols we know today have come from smaller, less established companies.
In South Korea, survival shows hold considerable weight in the K-pop industry. Their importance lies not only in their ability to launch groups, but also in their power to elevate contestants into the national spotlight. These shows provide a platform that can transform an unknown individual into a recognizable public figure. Through nationwide broadcast exposure, many participants gain the opportunity to capture the public’s attention and form an emotional connection with viewers.
Although most survival shows often face criticism for various reasons, audiences still walk away with something valuable — new K-pop idols. Even when a show itself fails to shine, the contestants certainly do.
Regardless of the program, viewers are naturally drawn to qualities such as strong performances, hard work, genuine personalities, and undeniable talent. When they witness dedication on screen, fans quickly form emotional connections and fall in love with the contestants. Here are some survival show idols who truly resonated with audiences.
Jang Wonyoung – Produce 48
Let’s be honest — you probably already knew that Wonyoung would top this list. Saying she’s one of the most famous K-pop stars would be a massive understatement. It often feels like she dominates the industry, even though she sometimes faces harsh criticism. Luxury brands compete for her endorsement, and nearly everything she does, says, wears, or eats turns into a trend.
Often referred to as the ‘IT girl’ or the ‘sold-out queen,’ Wonyoung ranked first on the girl group survival show ‘Produce 48’.
While the show’s popularity eventually fizzled, Wonyoung’s already massive fame skyrocketed when she became the center of her debut group. Due to her doll-like visuals, young age, and captivating aura, she was soon nicknamed ‘Born as center’ by viewers. She was frequently praised for perfectly capturing the public’s attention, and her ‘Side to Side’ performance remains one of the most iconic stages of the show.
Sung Hanbin – Boys Planet
Even if you don’t pay much attention to 5th generation K-pop idols, chances are you’ve come across the name Sung Hanbin at least once. Known as the leader of the group ZEROBASEONE, which was formed through Mnet’s survival show, Sung Hanbin is widely recognized for his incredible dancing skills, particularly in tutting and waacking.
From magazine covers and modeling gigs to MCing nationally televised shows, he has positioned himself as the face of the 5th wave of K-pop idols. However, his rise to fame began long before his debut in the group — it started with his appearance and audition performance on the show ‘Boys Planet’.
Aside from being labeled a ‘walking green flag’ by many viewers for his humble and caring nature—from his hug with Doha to teaching Zhang Hao tutting moves, and even giving up the killing part position during the first mission—Hanbin also went viral for his magnetic stage presence and skills.
If you watched his battle with the famous Lip J or his fancam of the show’s title song ‘Here I Am’, you’d understand why he became so popular.
Jeon Somi – Produce 101
If there’s a K-pop idol whose songs always spread across TikTok like wildfire, it’s Jeon Somi. The South Korean-Canadian soloist is not just a singer, but a public figure known for her vibrant personality. Even if her comebacks are often criticized for merely spawning TikTok challenges, it’s a fact that Jeon Somi is a talented soloist who has achieved huge domestic fame.
While she gained popularity through the show ‘Produce 101’, many are unaware of her earlier presence on the survival show ‘Sixteen’ — the reality program that created the iconic girl group TWICE.
The artist’s rise to popularity is the result of a combination of her talent, image, and market timing and exposure. High visibility and screen time during ‘Produce 101’ gave Somi instant recognition. Her fandom quickly formed, with people rooting for the ‘underdog-to-star’ narrative.
Kang Daniel – Produce 101
As the former center of the popular group WANNA ONE, Kang Daniel is one of the brightest solo artists in South Korea. He appeared on Gallup Korea’s list of Most Preferred Idols for several years and even held a Guinness World Record for the fastest Instagram growth. Despite rumors about his recent decline in popularity, Kang Daniel remains an incredibly talented artist with a very dedicated fanbase.
He consistently dominated throughout the entire show and became the face of the season. He won the final vote and became the center of the debut group thanks to his amazing dance skills and his masculine yet cute image. His popularity during the show was one of the key reasons the group was able to compete with top-tier acts like EXO and BTS.
Sunoo – I-Land
As a member of the prominent 4th generation K-pop group ENHYPEN, Sunoo is well known for his bright visuals and youthful energy. While the group has dominated the charts, accumulated awards, and grown a massive fanbase over the past few years, Sunoo stands out as a member with a distinct following of his own.
Although other members, like Ni-ki and Sunghoon, are also highly popular, Sunoo is often recognized for his bright and playful personality.
On the survival show, Sunoo consistently ranked high and was recognized as a stage genius for his expressive and versatile performances. One of his best qualities, as noted by many fans, is his captivating and engaging gaze, especially during performances like ‘Crown’ and ‘Fake Love’. Personally, I really loved his vocals during his ‘Save Me’ stage.
Survival shows are designed to create breakout stars. While the names above dominated headlines, many others have also left a lasting impact.
Stay tuned as we dive into these names in Part 2!
