[Review] OMEGA X Explains “WHAT’S GOIN’ ON” In Their Latest Comeback

OMEGA X formed under Spire Entertainment made its debut this year on 30th June with the release of their first mini-album VAMOS accompanied by the title track of the same name. 

The act of eleven is a cluster of idols from former and currently in-active K-POP groups. Members, Jaehan, Hwichan, Sebin, Hangyeom, Taedong, Xen, Jehyun, Kevin, Junghoon, Hyuk & Yechan might be the familiar faces you casually had a glance at, but as a group, what they bring to the table is rather new and exciting, leading fans to keep track on every move of theirs. Selling out all 20,000 copies of their debut mini-album in less than a week, the act embarked on its journey as one of the successful rookie group of 2021. After tasting success with their debut, OMEGA X made a quick return with the single album, WHAT’s GOIN’ ON comprising of a single of the same name and a B-side track, ‘BAILA CON OX’. A day before their comeback, OMEGA X announced their official fandom – ‘FOR X,’ short for “FORever with omega X.”

The Title Track

 

 

Since their debut, OMEGA X has shown its strength and comfort with EDM tracks. The title track ‘WHAT’S GOIN’ ON’ continues with the pompous sound of the group with heavy instrumentals. “Audio check, do you hear me?” begins Xen, as the members make sure they are heard when they make their grand return. The song definitely sounds pompous with intense electro-pop instrumentation and adding to the imposing tone, the members boast about their glorious journey as OMEGA X. “I’m killin’ with my graph, I’m going up and running wild/ Burst of cheers and firecrackers at my entrance,” sings Yechan and we can’t agree more. Following Hyuk’s lines, the track drops for a brief pre-chorus and raises up for the most expected cinematic chorus.

The chorus is undoubtedly addictive with the repetition of a rhetorical question, “What’s goin’ on now?” and an answer we all agree, “All eyes on O.X (La-la-la-ah)/ Oh, a new era is here, say hello (Hello! A-Day)”. The single is dominant with raspy verses and follows with the second verse giving the spotlight for some rapid rap verses led by Hangyeom, Jehyun and Kevin. The fearless tone of the group continues till the end with Hwichan and Yechan vocal bridge and later elevates to the climactic chorus. The outro, despite being a repetition, gives a final touch with all the members changing together with brustling energy. Altogether, the track is endearingly loud and has its own charm in pulling the listeners.

The Music Video

The music video greatly compliments the strong single and succeeds in showcasing the fierce colours of the group. Dressed in leather jackets and racer outfits, the members pull out a bad boy concept while staring straight into our souls. The individual shots are rapid throughout the video capturing the members’ stellar looks. With mics, speakers and amplifiers as props, the act of eleven heightens their voice as “Mega X”. Some other shots also include the members running in different futuristic sets and red lights flashing – ultimately cautioning the world about OMEGA X’s dominance.

Intense choreography is another niche for the members and the music video makes sure to highlight it. The members whizz around during their choreography and emphasising their bold and confident colours. The camera work with angles also helps in showcasing the power moves.

The B-Side

 

 

‘BAILA CON OX’ continues the EDM genre with heavy instrumentals and energy. The track’s tone and bold chorus make it sound like a lost cousin of the group’s B-side ‘OMEGA X’ in their debut album. The group continues with their brand “OX” and the inclusion of Spanish names and expressions by naming the track ‘BAILA CON OX’ meaning “Dance with OX”. As the song name suggests, the track is all about partying hard and celebrating with OMEGA X. The never slowing down track is dominant with raspy verses and gives a brief pause before the banging chorus. And, if you go shouting “All eyes on OX” instead of “Baila Con OX” every time the beat drops, just know that you are not alone. On the whole, the track with rasping lines, addictive beats, stimulating chorus and powerful chants instantly make us bob our heads during the listen.  

 

Final Thoughts

Though it was a quick return, OMEGA X has used this opportunity to prove themselves in a world that idealises the saying, “the first impression is the best impression”. The group have also been trying out new methods of promotional activities and interviews which goes hand in hand in establishing them in the K-Pop scene. 

Personally, OMEGA X  not only entertains us but has taught us one of the valuable lessons by rewriting what was supposed to be the fate of their career lives. This leap only makes us want to anticipate what they have in future.
