Review: ‘Happiness’ – Rising Tensions And Spilled Blood (Episode 9 & 10)

In this week’s episodes of ‘Happiness‘, our leads find themselves on the defensive as residents discover more infected people than they had believed. People begin to die mysteriously, which brings the residents to the breaking point. On the other hand, the lieutenant colonel gets news about the treatment and has to make a difficult choice.

The Infection Spreads

Episode 9 opens where last week’s episode left us: Yeong Ok charges into Sae Bom and Yi Hyun’s place. Angered by Yeong Ok’s greed, Sae Bom advises them to hold the meeting at the former’s place in a bid to reveal her true colours.

During the meeting, Sae Bom suggests a test to see who is infected. She holds up a knife to cut her hand. But, Yi Hyun arrives, takes the knife from her, cuts his hand instead, and walks up to everyone. Bo Ram turns and is taken to the gym. Before Sae Bom leaves, she asks Bo Ram about the towels, but she isn’t the one who threw them out.

The Reverend

The reason behind the reverend’s powers is made clear when Soo Min tells Yi Hyun that he doesn’t feel anything when the reverend is near. It doesn’t take long for our leads to realise that he is infected. In the scuffle that ensues, Joo Hyeong leads Woo Chang to his death while Yeong Ok blames Sae Bom and Yi Hyun for his death.

Infected

Outside, Han Tae Seok’s conversation with the President reveals that the lockdown at the Seyang Forest is an experiment to see how the virus mutates. He also receives news that Sae Bom does indeed have antibodies.

Back at the apartment complex, Yi Hyun pulls down his collar to reveal an infected scratch. He communicates with Tae Seok, wanting Sae Bom and Seo Yoon to leave the complex.

Where is Se Hoon?

Sae Bom finds a note saying that Se Hoon has left the apartment. Everyone jumps to the conclusion that he is infected. They want to take his supplies, but Sae Bom and Yi Hyun tell them to take only some food and water and leave enough for Se Hoon in case he returns.

The next morning, the cleaning lady is found dead with a bite mark on her neck. Everyone assumes that Se Hoon was the one who attacked her. Soon, however, Tae Sok tells Sae Bom that Guk Jin is dead, which means Andrew isn’t who he claims to be. Se Hoon is also found dead, and with his secret out, Andrew stabs Jung Kook. Sae Bom asks who is truly is, and he takes off his mask and goggles to reveal his identity.

Verdict

‘Happiness’ doesn’t stop with the twists and turns, leaving viewers holding onto the edge of their seats. The K-Drama beautifully depicts how humans act in situations when everyone’s life is on the line. It perfectly exemplifies the saying, “every man for himself.” Now that a murderer has been thrown in the mix, things have become even tenser.

We’re almost at the end, and all we can do is hope that the ending wraps up everything nicely, and of course, Yi Hyun gets cured. No one will be happy if something happens to him.
