Actress Han So Hee made a stunning debut at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, gracing the red carpet as a brand ambassador for the French luxury jewelry brand ‘Boucheron’. Although no Korean film has been selected to compete for the prestigious Palme d’Or , Lim Yoo-ri’s short film ‘Forest of Echoes’ is the sole Korean entry in the ‘La Cinef’ section. This 22-minute film uniquely blends historical fiction and fantasy, exploring Korean folklore and social issues through traditional rituals and costumes. It is set to be screened on May 22, 2024, and aims to make a significant impact in its category.
Director Ryoo Seung-wan’s film ‘I, the Executioner’ (Veteran 2) has been selected for the ‘Out of Competition’ category. The story follows Detective Seo Do-cheol (Hwang Jung-min) and his Major Crime Investigation Division, who tirelessly pursue criminals, often at the cost of their personal lives. When a professor’s murder is linked to past cases, suspicions of a serial killer emerge, throwing the country into chaos. As the Major Crimes team investigates, the killer taunts them by releasing online teasers about the next victim, escalating the tension. To address the growing threat, the team recruits idealistic rookie officer Park Sun-woo (Jung Hae-in), leading to unexpected twists in the investigation. Actor Jung Hae-in, Hwwang Jung-min and Director Ryoo Sung-woo also made an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival to promote his film, which is set to premiere today.

Additionally, Kim Lyang’s documentary ‘Walking in the Movies’ (Younghwa Cheongnyeon Dong-ho) is featured in the ‘Cannes Classics’ category. This documentary portrays Kim Dong-ho, the founder of the Busan International Film Festival and a pivotal figure in the rise of Korean cinema. It depicts his unwavering dedication to cinema, driven by his commitment and instinctive creativity. The film explores how this senior civil servant fell in love with cinema and dedicated his life to it.
Several Korean films unveiled their posters at Cannes, gathering much anticipation. Among them is ‘Love in the Big City,’ a romantic film based on a best-selling novel of the same name by Booker Prize nominee Park Sang-young, starring Kim Go-eun and Steve Noh. The film promises a heartwarming tale of a free-spirited woman and a secretive man and is expected to hit theaters later in 2024.
Another highly anticipated espionage action flick, ‘Harbin,’ starring Hyun Bin, Jeon Yeo-been, and Lee Dong-wook also released their poster. Set in the 1900s, the film chronicles the story of Korean independence activist Ahn Jung-geun, promising audiences a gripping tale of courage and intrigue. Directed by the acclaimed Woo Min-ho, known for his stellar work on ‘The Man Standing Next’(2020) and ‘Inside Men’ (2015). ‘Pretty Crazy’ and ‘Revolver ‘, each unveiling their striking promo posters. ’Pretty Crazy’ featuring Ahn Bo-hyun and Girls’ Generation YoonA in leading roles, promising a blend of romance and drama. On the other hand, ‘Revolver’ boasts a stellar ensemble cast including Cannes Best Actress winner Jeon Do-yeon and Ji Chang-wook, hinting at a riveting cinematic experience.
In addition to these prominent entries, a diverse lineup of Korean films is expected to be either featured, screened, or in the running for awards at Cannes 2024. The list includes ‘Amazon Bullseye,’ ‘Choir Of God,’ ‘Exorcism Chronicles: The Beginning,’ ‘Homeward Bound,’ ‘Land Of Happiness,’ ‘Night Fever’ ‘Mist,’ ‘The Old Woman With The Knife,’ ‘Pavane: For A Dead Princess,’ ‘Pilot,’ ‘Pororo Underwater Adventure,’ ‘The Shrine,’ and ‘White Blast.’
