The Plot
Kim Sun Bin, also known as Lee Ra El, returns to Korea after 13 long years of living abroad, driven by a single goal: revenge. Raised by a loving couple, Ra El had a happy childhood—until the day it was destroyed. In order to acquire Gediks, her father’s semiconductor company, Kang Yoon Gyeom (played by Park Byung Eun), Han Pan Ro (played by Jeon Gook Hwan), and Kim Jung Cheol (played by Jung Hae Kyun) used unethical measures. As a result of their actions, Ra El’s father ultimately loses his life, leaving her deeply traumatized by the events of her past.
After facing her father’s untimely and cruel death and her mother’s deteriorating mental health, which eventually leads to her disappearance, Ra El is sent abroad. There, she later becomes connected to Jang Moon Hee. Together, Jang Moon Hee and Lee Ra El—now known as Kim Sun Bin—assume the roles of mother and daughter, spending 13 long years meticulously planning to bring down those responsible for the deaths of their loved ones.
Hashing a clever plan to weaken the culprits from the inside out, Ra El decides to start with the now chairman of LY Group, Kang Yoon Gyeom. Under the guise of Kim Sun Bin, the mother of Jang Jin Wook’s (played by Lee Ha Yul) daughter, she infiltrates the upper echelons of Seoul and befriends Han So Ra (played by Yoo Sun). While playing the roles of a perfect mother, empathetic friend, and supportive wife, she slowly sets in motion her grand revenge plan with the help of Jang Moon Hee and Seo Eun Pyeong.
From discreetly dropping hints to Kang Yoon Gyeom and making him fall for her, to befriending his wife and Han Pan Ro’s daughter, Han So Ra, she plays with the corrupt chaebols like a puppeteer pulling strings, all to orchestrate a scandalous divorce and bring down the LY Group. Faced with numerous hurdles, conflicting emotions, her past demons, and the loss of her loved ones, she slowly hardens her heart to not only avenge her parents but also all the victims who were harmed by the underhanded tactics of the LY Group.
The Characters
Lee Ra El/ Kim Sun Bin (played bySeo Yea Ji)
A stunning young woman with a dark past, she is the daughter of Gediks Semiconductor’s CEO, Lee Tae Joon. After the LY Group forcibly acquires Gediks by torturing her father, leading to his death, she is left with PTSD, a “senile” mother, and a thirst for revenge. She teams up with Jang Moon Hee, another victim of the LY Group’s underhanded tactics, and, through the disguise of Kim Sun Bin, aims to sow discord among LY Group’s president Kang Yoon Gyeom, his wife Han So Ra, his father-in-law Han Pan Ro, and his lackey Kim Jung Cheol.
Kang Yoon Gyeom (played by Park Byung Eun)
LY Group’s CEO and Han So Ra’s husband, he is the main target of Ra El’s revenge. Shown as stoic and cold, Yoon Gyeom is revealed to have much more to his personality than what meets the eye. A father of two and the current prime minister’s son-in-law, he falls for Kim Sun Bin’s advances and has an extramarital affair with her. Facing divorce, his wish to fully love the one he loves is not granted until it is already much too late.
Seo Eun Pyeong (played by Lee Sang Yeob)
An attorney turned Blue Office secretary, he is a handsome and righteous man who is always supportive of Ra El’s cause. He is shown to be quick-witted, calm, and unafraid, willing to let go of the one he loves. He is shown to have feelings for Ra El, which remain largely unreciprocated, as she focuses on her revenge and then unknowingly falls for Kang Yoon Gyeom while maintaining her fake charade of love.
Han So Ra (played by Yoo Sun)
A spoiled, wealthy daughter of Prime Minister Han Pan Ro and the wife of LY Group’s chairman Kang Yoon Gyeom, she is an adulterous, jealous, and paranoid character obsessed with maintaining her appearance and keeping Kang Yoon Gyeom in check. She is shown as a cruel and short-tempered woman who is willing to go to any lengths to keep what she considers “hers.” She is also a target of Ra El’s revenge due to her involvement in her mother’s and teacher Jang Moon Hee’s disappearance and eventual demise.
