EXO’s Lay Has Officially Ended His Contract With SM Entertainment

Today being the 10th anniversary of EXO, Chinese member Lay shared 2 handwritten letters (in English and in Korean) on his Twitter and Instagram handles @layzhang

In the letter, the EXO member stated his gratitude towards his journey in the past decade and he thanked the members and his staff at SM as he bid goodbye to SM Entertainment.

A particular line got the fans in tears, as he wrote, “I’ll always be the Lay when my members need me. I’m your family member in China, Zhang Yixing.”

It is not yet confirmed if Lay will continue to promote as part of EXO or not. In the past, several artists have continued to promote with the group even if they part ways with the company. It is however confirmed by the artist that he has ended his 10 years contract with SM Entertainment. After Lay posted the news, SM Entertainment told Star News, “The existing exclusive contract has expired, and we are discussing a new type of contract.”

Lay also took it to Weibo to express his gratitude and thank the fans and SM Entertainment for his past journey and gave encouraging words to the fans.

Lay was occupied with his solo activities since 2016 but in 2021, he made a comeback with the group for their mini-album ‘Don’t Fight the Feeling’ for their ninth anniversary. In 2018, he also appeared in EXO’s music video ‘Tempo’ and participated in it’s Chinese version.

He released a song titled ‘JIU’ today which included various voice notes from the members.

The song sweetly portrays each member’s power with a sentimental touch. Well, that’s what Lay is about. He made sure his fans and members felt safe through his song.

EXO‘s Lay Zhang had officially launched his own entertainment agency, Chromosome Entertainment in 2020. He also started appearing as a mentor and captain in the third season of the Chinese dance survival show Street Dance of China. His latest drama is titled Challenges at Midlife. On 7 October 2021, Lay released the single “Samadhi Real Fire”, the pre-release single for his new EP East, which was released on 15 October.
