Applying to South Korean Universities: A Guide for Indian Students

As Hallyu continues to sweep across India, South Korea has become a gateway to more than just K-Pop and tourism. With the growing availability of Korean language classes, scholarships for international students, and opportunities for global exposure, the country has become an increasingly popular choice for students seeking to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies abroad.

However, navigating the admission process and securing the right student visa may not always be straightforward. While the required documents may vary from university to university, the basic guidelines remain largely the same.

For those planning to pursue higher education in South Korea but unsure where to begin, here’s a simplified guide to help you get started!

Admission Application

Universities in South Korea generally have two admission cycles: Fall and Spring. Students who are unable to apply for the Fall semester due to missing documents can prepare to apply for the Spring semester, and vice versa.

The required documents for graduate school applications are as follows:

  • An application form completed and submitted online through the respective university’s portal.
  • A personal statement.
  • A research proposal.
  • A bachelor’s degree certificate or diploma (original copy with an apostille).
  • Bachelor’s degree transcripts from all institutions attended (original copies with an apostille).
  • Proof of language proficiency (TOPIK Level 5 or above for Korean-taught programmes, although some universities may accept Level 3; IELTS or TOEFL scores for English-taught programmes).
  • A letter of recommendation from a professor at the applicant’s previous institution.
  • Proof of financial funds (a bank deposit certificate showing approximately USD 20,000 for a two-year master’s programme; the required amount may vary for PhD programmes).
  • Proof of family relationship if the applicant’s parents are funding their education (birth certificate and copies of the parents’ passports).
  • A name affidavit if the name on the applicant’s passport differs from that on their degree certificate.
  • A copy of the applicant’s passport.

As original documents are issued only once in India, applicants can have photocopies of their degree certificates and transcripts notarised before obtaining an apostille to authenticate them. Several agencies in India specialise in apostille services for university admissions in South Korea, offering both standard and express processing options. These apostilled documents are accepted by Korean universities for admission purposes.

For those planning to apply for the Spring semester, it is advisable to begin preparing these documents well in advance, ideally from the previous Spring. The same applies to Fall semester applicants. Starting early allows sufficient time to address any unexpected delays in the process.

A letter of recommendation is mandatory for admission to most universities in South Korea. Korean universities specifically ask for a letter from a professor at your previous institution. The professor must be able to attest to your skills beyond academics, such as your soft skills, involvement in university activities outside the classroom, and how you can contribute to your chosen programme in South Korea. The submission process for the letter of recommendation varies by university. Make sure to check the website of your preferred university for the exact requirements.

For most universities in South Korea, documents are first submitted online. The original documents are then mailed to the university to confirm your application for admission. Always make sure to keep a set of original documents with you, as documents submitted to the university may not be returned to the applicant.

Tip: When researching universities in South Korea, consider emailing the admissions committee with any questions you may have about the programme before submitting your application. This also helps demonstrate your interest in the university and allows the admissions team to become familiar with your profile.

Admission Interview

Once the application period is over, graduate school applicants are contacted for an interview. The interview may be held for all candidates or only shortlisted candidates, depending on the university’s admission guidelines.

On the day of the interview, be sure to check your inbox for any last-minute updates. Once you enter the meeting room, greet the interviewers with a smile and introduce yourself briefly. Keep your introduction brief and precise. If your university programme is in Korean, speak in as much Korean as you can. If your programme is in English, stick to speaking in English, as the admissions team assesses your language proficiency during the interview.

When answering the interviewers’ questions about why you would like to study in South Korea, be sure to emphasise the strengths of the programme and what you hope to gain from the university. If you are an avid K-Pop or K-Drama fan and learnt Korean because of it, you can honestly share that, but focus on what you hope to learn at the university and what your future career goals are.

If you have any further questions about the university, be sure to ask the interviewers at the end. The university admissions team is always eager to hear from potential students.

Visa Application

If you get accepted into a Korean university, congratulations! The easy part is done!

Now comes the part that frustrates students more than they expect: applying for a student visa. Depending on your programme, you will need to apply for either a D-2 visa (for degree programmes, including master’s and doctoral studies) or a D-4 visa (for language training). Below is the list of documents you will need for your visa

Documents required from the applicant:

  • Visa application form (completed online through the Korea Visa Portal; an English version of the website is available).
  • Grade 10 and Grade 12 marksheets (original, notarised and apostilled).
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate or diploma (original, notarised and apostilled).
  • Master’s degree certificate or diploma (for PhD applicants; original, notarised and apostilled).
  • Language proficiency certificate (IELTS or TOPIK).
  • Proof of funds (bank statements for the last six months and income tax returns for the last two years).
  • Family relationship certificate (a photocopy of the birth certificate if parents are funding the education).
  • Passport copy of the applicant (and parents, if they are funding the education).
  • Affidavit from parents confirming that they are funding the applicant’s education, if applicable.
  • Cover letter addressed to the Embassy of South Korea requesting a student visa.

Documents required from the university:

  • Certificate of admission.
  • Business registration certificate.

When applying from India, submit your visa application through VFS Global in Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, or Delhi, depending on your place of residence. As visa processing takes approximately 20 working days (excluding weekends and holidays), apply for your student visa as soon as you receive the required documents from your university. Some VFS centres offer an express service for an additional fee, so be sure to check with your regional centre when applying.

To avoid rush hour at VFS Global, try to reach the centre before opening hours. You can submit your visa application in person or hire a travel agent to submit the documents on your behalf. Upon payment, VFS provides a receipt and tracking details, allowing you to track your application status online through the Korea Visa Portal. You can either collect your passport in person or have it delivered to your address by post.

And that’s everything! Preparing to study in Korea can be challenging due to the extensive paperwork, but once that is sorted, the process becomes a whole lot easier.
