“Humans always try to know everything because they fear the unknown.” – Van
Welcome to the world of the fantasy-action thriller ‘Island,’ which takes a bold step away from typical K-drama romance, offering a dark story rooted in folklore and horror. Moving away from standard ghost stories, it delivers a gritty, action-packed, and high-stakes adventure that embraces mature themes and intense physical storytelling.
While the show features a highly capable cast, its most notable achievement is how it shifts the tone of modern supernatural dramas. This Korean drama adapted from the hit Naver webtoon by Youn In-wan and Yang Kyung-il is split into two parts but tells one relentless story.

The Plot
Set on the mysterious Jeju Island, the story revolves around an ancient evil known as lust demons that are trying to break into the human world and destroy it. The island is a cosmic prison and a breeding ground for these lust demons. They are spirits that possess humans by feeding on their deepest, darkest desires, eventually turning their victims into stone and ash.
The narrative follows an unlikely trio drawn together by fate, prophecy, and unresolved tragedy spanning a millennium. When a wealthy heiress, Won Mi-ho, is exiled to the island by her family, she finds herself targeted by these terrifying spirits. She quickly learns that she is the reincarnation of a powerful savior from the past.
To survive, she must rely on an unlikely team of protectors: Van, a tragic, immortal hunter who is half-human and half-monster, and Johan, a young Catholic priest sent on a divine mission to purify the island. As the demons grow more aggressive and organized, the characters must confront not only the monsters outside but also the deeply rooted traumas of their own past lives.
The Characters
Van (Played by Kim Nam-gil)
Van is an immortal human-demon hybrid who has lived for centuries with a single purpose. Captured and brutally experimented on as a child by an ancient religious sect, he was injected with demon blood to become a mindless killing machine.
In the modern day, he fights dressed in a razor-sharp black suit, carrying a heavy burden of grief, isolation, and a deep-seated hatred for his own monstrous nature. Kim Nam-gil plays him with a brilliant, weary intensity, communicating centuries of pain with just a glare.
Won Mi-ho (Played by Lee Da-hee)
Won Mi-ho begins the series as a fierce, sharp-tongued, and incredibly arrogant heiress. After an engineered public relations scandal backfires, her family banishes her to Jeju Island to lay low and teach at a local high school.
She has absolutely no memory of her past life, completely unaware that she is the reincarnation of Wonjeong—a holy savior whose unique spiritual power is required to create a permanent barrier against the demons.
Johan (Played by Cha Eun-woo)
Johan is a youthful, trendy exorcist priest trained by the Vatican, sent to Jeju on a divine mission to protect the savior. Dressed in stylish streetwear, sporting earrings, and listening to hip-hop through his headphones while performing exorcisms, he brings a much-needed lighter, chaotic energy to the dark environment. When pushed to his limits, he wields a divine sword and displays surprisingly fierce physical grit.
Gungtan (Played by Sung Joon)
Gungtan is Van’s surrogate brother from childhood who underwent the same painful, traumatic demon-blood rituals. Unlike Van, who chose to protect humanity despite his suffering, Gungtan grew to despise humans entirely after a devastating betrayal in their past life.
Having broken free from his slumber, he re-emerges in the modern day with shock-white hair and a cold smile, acting as the ruthless mastermind orchestrating the demon uprising.
Why ‘Island’ Is Worth the Watch

- Kim Nam-gil’s commanding performance: Known for his intensity, Kim Nam-gil brings Van to life with raw physicality and quiet emotional weight. He’s an immortal hunter tired of centuries of bloodshed, yet he carries every fight with purpose. His presence alone makes every scene feel dangerous and grounded.
- Folklore-driven storytelling with real stakes: Unlike typical supernatural dramas, Island roots its conflict in Korean shamanism, prophecy, and ancient curses tied to Jeju Island. The mythology isn’t just a backdrop—it drives the plot, the characters’ choices, and the cost of every battle. Every demon killed and secret revealed raises the stakes.
- A trio with clashing ideals and chemistry: Van, Won Mi-ho, and Priest Jo-han aren’t a typical team. Van fights for survival, Won Mi-ho struggles with a destiny she never chose, and Jo-han wrestles with faith and guilt. Their clashing beliefs and growing trust create tension that feels earned, not forced, as they are forced to face evil together.
- Atmosphere that makes Jeju feel alive: The drama uses Jeju Island’s misty cliffs, abandoned temples, and stormy coastlines to build dread and beauty in equal measure. The setting becomes a character itself—ancient, unpredictable, and hiding secrets that refuse to stay buried.
A Deeper Look
At its core, ‘Island’ explores destiny, sacrifice, and what it means to be human when evil has been buried for centuries. Van has spent centuries fighting demons, but his fate forces him to protect Won Mi-ho, a woman whose past life is deeply connected to the battle against the evil he hunts. Won Mi-ho, raised in privilege, suddenly finds that her life is no longer entirely her own—it is tied to an ancient conflict. Johan, a priest and exorcist sent to Jeju on a divine mission, is pulled into a battle far bigger than he expected.
The drama also examines the clash between folklore and modernity. Jeju Island’s supernatural legends are not treated as mere superstition; they are deeply connected to the forces threatening the present. The series shows how the past can break into the present when ancient evil resurfaces. The use of faith, power, and destiny becomes central to the story, as Won Mi-ho’s identity and spiritual power make her a crucial part of the fight.
Through Van’s journey from a lone hunter to someone willing to protect rather than simply destroy, the series asks whether people can break free from the roles fate assigns them. Can Won Mi-ho survive without becoming a weapon? Can Johan fulfill his mission without losing himself? And can Van, who has spent centuries fighting demons, choose to protect rather than simply destroy?
The answers aren’t clean, and that’s the point. ‘Island’ isn’t about tidy endings. It’s about fighting for them anyway.
The Final Verdict
‘Island’ is a high-caliber dark fantasy drama that delivers non-stop entertainment and visual splendor. It stands as a significant entry in the supernatural genre, proving that K-dramas can execute grand-scale horror and intense action while maintaining a powerful emotional center. By masterfully blending traditional folklore with modern storytelling techniques, the series provides a thrilling, memorable, and satisfying cinematic experience. It is a must-watch for fans of action-adventure, mythology, and high-stakes fantasy storytelling.
