The Plot

Shin I-rang (Yoo Yeon-seok) dreams of creating the best law firm in Korea. However, his path takes an unexpected turn when he opens his practice in Room 501 of the Okcheon Building — a former shaman’s residence where the veil between worlds is thin. There, he discovers that he can see and communicate with ghosts. As he listens to their stories, I-rang begins resolving their lingering grievances and helping them move on.

Despite his timid and clumsy nature, he shows unwavering determination when confronting the injustices faced by his unconventional clients. When possessed, he temporarily embodies the spirits he represents, adopting their traits and behaviors, turning courtroom proceedings into unforgettable spectacles.

Han Na-hyun (Esom) is the ace lawyer at Taebaek Law Firm. Her life was shattered after an accident killed her sister, So-hyun, leaving her burdened with overwhelming guilt. After discovering So-hyun’s diary, she learns of her sister’s dream of becoming a lawyer. Driven by guilt, Na-hyun fulfills that dream and rises to the top of a major law firm.

Undefeated until a devastating loss brings her face-to-face with Shin I-rang, she is forced to confront not only a formidable opponent, but also everything she believes about justice, guilt, and the possibility of redemption.

The Characters

Shin I-rang (Played by Yoo Yeon-seok)

A timid and clumsy lawyer who dreams big but struggles with confidence, until he discovers his ability to see and be possessed by ghosts. Yoo Yeon-seok delivers a delightfully layered performance, shifting from a bumbling attorney to a fierce, otherworldly advocate as different spirits take control. His portrayal captures both the humor of sudden personality shifts and the deep empathy of a man who becomes a vessel for the voiceless.

Han Na-hyun (Played by Esom)

Taebaek Law Firm’s ace lawyer, sharp, driven, and undefeated until she meets I-rang. Esom brings fierce intelligence and raw vulnerability to Na-hyun, whose entire career is built on guilt over her sister’s death. Her journey from a cold perfectionist to someone willing to question everything she knows forms the emotional backbone of the series. Hwang Hyun-jung plays the younger Na-hyun.

Why This Drama is Your Next Binge-Watch

Image

  • A Fresh Fantasy-Legal Hybrid: While ghost-lawyer dramas already exist, ‘Phantom Lawyer’ distinguishes itself with its possession premise. Watching Yoo Yeon-seok transform from character to character — a brash gangster, a weeping mother, a defiant activist — is both hilarious and heartbreaking.
  • Yoo Yeon-seok’s Tour-de-Force Performance: Known for his scene-stealing roles, Yoo Yeon-seok carries the entire drama with remarkable range. His ability to switch personas mid-scene, maintaining each ghost’s distinct mannerisms while advancing the legal argument, is a masterclass in acting.
  • Esom’s Powerful Counterpart: As the skeptical, guilt-ridden ace lawyer, Esom grounds the fantasy elements with raw human emotion. Her chemistry with Yoo Yeon-seok evolves from rivalry to reluctant partnership to genuine connection, avoiding romantic clichés while building real depth.
  • Case-of-the-Week with Heart: Each ghost client brings a new story — wrongful death, suppressed evidence, unfinished business — and each resolution delivers catharsis. The cases are genuinely moving without becoming melodramatic.
  • Global Availability: Streaming simultaneously on Netflix, Viki, and Viu, ‘Phantom Lawyer’ reached international audiences from its premiere week.
  • Compelling Mystery Arc: Beyond its episodic cases, the drama weaves a gripping mystery surrounding the building’s shamanic past, the accident that killed Na-hyun’s sister, and the corruption linking multiple seemingly unrelated cases.

A Deeper Look

At its core, ‘Phantom Lawyer’ explores grief, guilt, and the question of whether justice can ever truly be served when the injured party is already gone. Na-hyun’s entire identity as a lawyer is built on trying to atone for her sister’s death — but I-rang’s ghost clients force her to confront a harder question: Is she fighting for justice, or running from her own pain?

The drama also examines the legal system’s failure to hear the voiceless. Ghosts in this world aren’t just sad — they’re stuck, unable to move on until someone acknowledges their truth. I-rang becomes that someone, not through magical solutions, but through dogged legal work, showing that justice for the dead often requires fighting the living.

Through its possession premise, the series also asks: What would you do if you could literally walk in someone else’s shoes? I-rang’s temporary transformations force him to experience the pain, anger, and love of his clients. It becomes a literal metaphor for empathy — and a powerful argument that true advocacy requires feeling what your client feels.

The Final Verdict

While the pacing occasionally lags and some supporting characters remain underdeveloped, ‘Phantom Lawyer’ succeeds where many genre-blending dramas fail — it balances its fantasy premise with genuine legal stakes, finds humor without undermining tragedy, and builds a central relationship that feels earned rather than forced. Yoo Yeon-seok and Esom deliver career-highlight performances, and the episodic ghost stories will leave you reaching for tissues as often as they make you cheer.

A timid lawyer possessed by ghosts. An ace attorney haunted by guilt. Together, they fight for clients no one else can see and win cases no one else thought possible.
