Review: ‘Undercover Miss Hong’- Trials of Friendship and Morals (Episodes 3 & 4)

Episodes 3 and 4 of ‘Undercover Miss Hong’ are out and I am INVESTED!

With experienced actors, fantastic chemistry and a novel plot, it’s no wonder this series is making waves and maintaining a steady upward trend in viewership ratings. The new episodes raise the for Hong Geum Bo, whose unique and righteous personality makes blending in a nightmare and standing out a daily ordeal (not an ideal look on an undercover agent). Yet these challenges also allow Miss Hong to break the ice with her roommates and re-live her 20s in ways she never imagined.

Episode 3

At the end of Episode 2, Miss Hong becomes suspicious of Ko Bok Hui and suddenly encounters Shin Jeong U. In the third episode, she professionally deflects his ‘advances’ as ‘Jeong Mi’ and returns to her dorm. The scenes that follow, the ‘illegal’ chicken delivery, the roommate infighting and then reconciliation, and of course the fear of RA, are some of my favourite sequences. The organic and oh-so-relatable moments between the members of dorm room 301 evoke not just chaos and comedy within the drama, but also reflect the never ending, very realistic, instances of dorm life and girlhood.

While Bok Hui’s credibility diminished in Geum Bo’s mind, she’s not yet considered a threat, only suspicious. Meanwhile, at work, after successfully helping the Risk Management Department with development of an intranet system for Hanmin Securities, Geum Bo sets her sight on So Gyeong Dong (played by Seo Hyun Chul), a legendary trader working for Hanmin, as the next possible candidate to be ‘Yehppee.’

Her guess proves wrong, however, as she soon finds herself under the spotlight at a disciplinary hearing, a scapegoat at risk of getting fired and exposed.

Episode 4

Episode 3 wraps up with a flashback scene building the preface to Shin Jeong U and Hong Geum Bo’s story from episode 2 and episode 4 returns to the present, where they sit across each other again, but as ‘strangers’- a successful CEO and a 20 year old high-school graduate temp worker. The disciplinary hearing was, as expected, a hoax and Geum Bo barely makes it out safe, albeit with an added task and condition to recover the missing 3 billion or resign. Easier said than done.

You might wonder, ‘how is a 20 year old temp supposed to manage that when executives aren’t able to?’ Well, she’s not just any temp, she’s the ‘Witch’ of Yeouido, of course she has a plan. Hearing the conditions and the consequences, the girls of dorm 301 come together. Their mission is to not let Geum Bo get fired by helping her catch the culprit. Their plan? To make ‘lies into truth’ via internet rumors and flush out the ‘rat’. Despite the danger, their plan works, and Geum Bo is not fired.

The girls receive their first paycheck and Geum Bo decides to treat them all. Honestly, these end scenes of the girls partying, having fun and making fun of Geum Bo’s colleagues from FSS, were my favourite scenes this episode, second only to the airport chase sequence (I couldn’t control my laughter!)

Final Thoughts

These two episodes were filled with wholesome moments and of course the mysterious (and very much criminal/illegal) corporate wars. There was a good balance between comedy, mystery and drama, though I don’t see how the ‘romance’ aspect is going to continue. Since we’re still pretty early into the series, I’ll reserve my comments on the romance and wait for the next episodes to air. For now, the bonding between the 301 roommates was the highlight of these episodes to me.

Miss Hong’s suspicions towards Bok Hui stem from very valid reasons and rightfully so, but she still doesn’t act on it and lets nature take its course which, as of now, has worked in her favor. But the recent developments suggest there’s more to the story than let on. The new entry of ‘Yeouido Pirates’, still missing ‘Yehppee’ and the trashed dorm room at the end of episode 4 (and the following cliffhanger-argh!) deepens the mystery.
