Review: ‘Would You Marry Me?’ – The First Love! (Episodes 5 & 6)

What better way to end this workweek than by watching our latest K-drama obsession?

In general, every K-drama has a message to deliver, and you are often inspired by the characters. It’s not always the endings—sometimes, even in the opening scenes or at the most unexpected moments in a drama, you can be hit with life lessons or situations that you are familiar with.

In ‘Would You Marry Me?,’ the central character, Yoo Me-Ri, has faced different personal and financial struggles, yet she continues to move on with remarkable courage and patience. It might all be fictional, but the show somehow reminds you that even if sometimes everything might fall apart, there’s still a chance for a turnaround.

Another outstanding aspect of this show is the chemistry between the main leads. While the actors deliver an overall commendable performance—especially in making their chaotic situation hilarious—their connection and relationship feel almost real.

These days, viewers have started saying that Korean dramas have lost their genuine spark. For instance, romantic chemistries often feel too rushed or lack the natural flow that makes them feel authentic. However, fans have fallen in love with the organic and romantic buildup of SBS’s new rom-com drama.

So, let’s take a look at this week’s review.

Episode 5

It’s finally revealed that Woo-Joo was well aware that Me-Ri was the childhood girl he had met before. However, Me-Ri’s ex-fiancé is now back in town after being rejected by Jenny. As he tries to call Me-Ri and doesn’t get through—since Me-Ri blocked him—he has the audacity to think that she is playing hard to get.

Elsewhere, Woo-Joo comes across Baek Sang-Hyeon (played by Bae Na Ra), the secretary who came to meet Woo-Joo’s grandmother for a collaboration initiative between the two companies. Luckily, Sang-Hyeon doesn’t mention anything about Woo-Joo’s wife or their lottery house to his uncle. As they come out of the elevator, they are joined by Me-Ri, who has actually come to pick up her wallet from Woo-Joo. Thankfully, they are both able to reprise their roles as husband and wife in front of the secretary.

Meanwhile, the other Woo-Joo is constantly pressured by his mother and sister to marry Jenny and introduce her to them. Enraged, he storms out of the house and reminisces about his former relationship with Me-Ri, when he used to be her everything.

On what should’ve been a happy day (since it’s his birthday), Woo-Joo visits a temple and pays tribute to his late parents. But once again, his aunt and cousin remind him that he is to blame for his parents’ death. Feeling sad and lonely, Woo-Joo is about to take medicine for his panic attack when he receives a text from Me-Ri. Upon seeing her message and the picture of a blooming cactus, Woo-Joo’s condition improves.

After she learns that it’s his birthday, Me-Ri invites Woo-Joo for a home-cooked meal. Given the effort Me-Ri puts into cooking for Woo-Joo, you can already see that something is changing in her and she’s slowly warming up to him. Upon seeing all those dishes on the table, especially the iconic birthday seaweed soup, Woo-Joo is emotionally moved.

Later, as they rush to the balcony to watch the double rainbow, Me-Ri trips on a water hose and falls into Woo-Joo’s arms. As they move closer to each other—almost to the point of a kiss—you can see Me-Ri’s ex-fiancé watching them from below.

Episode 6

Unfortunately, our leads don’t get to kiss as Me-Ri spots her ex-fiancé and hides from him. Then she informs Woo-Joo about his arrival, and Woo-Joo suggests working with her ex. Why, you ask? Because he thinks that would be the best way to keep them from being exposed. But I completely agree with Me-Ri, who immediately rejects this idea.

Later, at work, an unexpected issue arises when the monk whose poems Me-Ri used in the new packaging is caught in a scandal and criticized by the public. As a result, Me-Ri and her assistant have to work with Myunsoondang’s marketing team to prevent the packages from being delivered and to remove the cards with the poems. Amidst this professional struggle, viewers get to see unexpected tenderness and moments of connection between the two main leads.

Of course, after this sweet emotional bonding, we have the appearance of the bad omen—Me-Ri’s ex-fiancé. Out of nowhere, he comes back to her and pleads for a second chance. It’s astonishing how he doesn’t even mention that he was hit with karma and that Jenny cheated on him. On a personal level, I’ll never understand how these people have the nerve to act like cheating or having affairs is not a big deal. I salute Me-Ri for not falling into his trap.

However, the idiot has the audacity to follow Me-Ri and Woo-Joo to their townhouse and think that Me-Ri is cheating behind his back. Worse, he believes that Me-Ri was having an affair before they broke up.

As he barges into the house—with Woo-Joo gone—Me-Ri claps her hands and turns off all the lights to prevent him from seeing her wedding picture with Woo-Joo. Unable to see anything, he stumbles and falls to the ground. Since his family has gone to Japan and can’t be reached, Me-Ri has no choice but to be his guardian and take care of him. She even forgets her lunch appointment with sweet Woo-Joo.

Later on, as Woo-Joo walks into the hospital, he comes across Me-Ri and her ex-fiancé, who is clinging to her. He immediately drags him away from Me-Ri and leads him toward his room. When Me-Ri asks Woo-Joo why he is so angry, he finally musters the courage to admit his feelings for her. There’s no fancy setup, no flowers or candles, yet his blunt honesty and raw confession somehow make my heart skip a beat. What about you?

Final Thoughts

It turns out my suspicions were right—Woo-Joo’s uncle was the one behind his parents’ deaths. Beneath that polite smile and caring demeanor lies a monster. I just can’t wait for the moment when Woo-Joo finds out the truth.

Now, with her ex-fiancé back, there will be scenes where we’ll see a jealous Woo-Joo, and I’m happy about that since he’s one of my favorite actors. But I’m curious and wondering when Me-Ri will confirm her feelings for Woo-Joo. I just hope they don’t have a boring dating timeline.
