Often regarded as a living legend of Korean music, Kim rose to fame in the 1990s with his unique, high-toned yet soulful voice. His second album, ‘Excuses’ (1993), sold over 2 million copies and introduced reggae sounds to the Korean public, while his third album, ‘Wrongful Meeting’, featuring the hit title track of the same name, became a Guinness World Record holder for the highest-selling album in Korean pop history until 2019.
Some of his timeless hits include ‘the moon of Seoul’, ‘Sadder Than Yesterday’, ‘Sleepless Rainy Night’, ‘A Beautiful Farewell’, ‘Wrongful Meeting’, and others.
In 1994, he made history by becoming the only artist to win the Grand Prize (Daesang) at the music awards for all three major broadcast stations (KBS, MBC, SBS), along with the Seoul Music Awards and Golden Disc Awards.
Kim had stepped away from the spotlight in 2019 following a controversy. However, he has since been cleared of all charges, and anticipation for his comeback is high.
