Despite being a rom-com K-Drama, Episodes 9 & 10 of ‘Yumi’s Cells’ had us on the edge of our seats. Our lead faces the biggest hurdle in her relationship, finds a new friend, and encounters an opportunity at work that resurrects her long-forgotten dreams.
Incidentally, episode 9 of webtoon based ‘Yumi’s Cells’ achieved an impressive rating of 3.8 in South Korea, its highest ratings yet. This development isn’t surprising in the least, with its realistic depiction of life, and is based on one of the most popular webtoons.
Good Bye Sae Yi
Last week, viewers were hit with the full brunt of Sae Yi’s manipulative side. Woong was aware of her feelings but chose to disregard them, which led to Sae Yi using underhanded methods to keep him under her control. She regularly interfered in his and Yumi’s relationship and got away with a lot of things she shouldn’t have.
Last week, when Sae Yi went all out and moved to Woong’s apartment building, Yumi confronted him about this. But, not getting a good enough explanation, stormed out of the building. She was depressed after her battle with Woong, and even though she didn’t want to break up, her cells set a 24-hour deadline — if he wouldn’t contact her, it means they have broken up for good.
However, Yumi and Woong didn’t separate after the Sae Yi fiasco. Even though there were a few hiccups along the way, our leads managed to come out even stronger.
Budding Friendship?
Yumi’s Love Cell has a flaw: she is incapable of performing cute acts (aegyo). So, Detective Cell tried numerous methods to make Love Cell act charming, but he was unsuccessful. So, he told her that Ruby’s cuteness is the best approach to further pique Woong’s interest in her.
Yumi and Ruby’s friendship kicks off as a result, with Ruby teaching the former how to be cute in front of Woong. Yumi tried her hardest but was unable to do much. Eventually, however, she acts cute, and Woong starts liking her more and more.
The Writer Cell
Yumi had dreams of becoming a writer when she was young. But she struggled and then eventually gave up on writing altogether. She struggles to write for a new assignment at work, especially since her Writer Cell is in the graveyard, but manages to pull through. Her writing gains the attention of Bobby and his manager and Yumi is given a new opportunity — to join the marketing team.
We also get to see how Yumi and Bobby go from being strangers to acquaintances, and how he inadvertently helps her resurrect her Writer Cell.
Verdict
As heartbreaking as the confrontation was, we are glad that it happened because this had been brewing for a long time. We loved the difference in how Yumi and Woong reacted to anger, one burning up and the other freezing. We are also happy that Yumi finally called Sae Yi out on her behaviour, which in turn led to Woong realising that he has to stop his friend from getting away with everything she does.
This week, we especially loved the concept of compliments and how receiving a meaningful compliment is not easy. The concept of compliments being little packages that are delivered to the Cell Village is quite cute.
With each new developments ‘Yumi’s Cells‘, viewers are shown facets of life that mimic our own. The cells’ antics have us laughing as usual, but we also get insights into our own life — something we’d not have paid attention to if not for the cells.
