On February 14, the 12th Civil Division of the Seoul Western District Court ordered Sojang to pay a total of 76 million KRW in reparation after she was found guilty in the defamation lawsuit filed by BTS members Kim Taehyung and Jeon Jungkook against her.
The court ordered Sojang to pay 51 million KRW ($35,000 USD) to BigHit Entertainment, the label that manages BTS, 10 million KRW ($7,000 USD) to Kim Taehyung, and 15 million KRW ($10,000 USD) to Jeon Jungkook in damages.
Park Joo Ah, 36, known as Sojang, is a YouTuber who ran ‘Taldeok Camp’ and made defamatory videos that targeted various Korean celebrities by spreading false rumors regarding their personal and professional lives. The sensational commentary in her videos led the YouTuber to garner significant attention online and her channel grew quickly. Many followers not only believed her but also followed her lead thus perpetuating a troll culture targeting the celebrities.
Previously Sojang also lost defamation lawsuits filed against her by IVE’s Jang Wonyoung and soloist Kang Daniel. Sojang was fined and sentenced to two years of probation. Her YouTube Channel was also suspended. She later repealed the court’s decision.
