The South Korean entertainment industry has rallied in response to the nation’s worst wildfires. Many renowned Hallyu stars, including K-pop idols and Korean actors, have contributed substantial donations to aid recovery efforts and support those affected by the devastating disaster.
Beginning in the southeast on March 21, the wildfires forced tens of thousands to evacuate. The disaster left a 1,300-year-old temple in Uiseong city in ruins and put other cultural landmarks at risk. Manhyujeong Pavilion in Andong, well-known as a filming location for the popular K-drama ‘Mr. Sunshine’, may have also been destroyed.
Recent Korean media reports reveal that BTS’ Jungkook has joined his bandmates RM, j-hope, and Suga in making significant contributions to the cause. Jungkook personally donated an impressive 1 billion KRW, currently the largest known contribution from any individual public figure since the wildfires broke out, while the other members of the globally renowned K-pop group BTS each contributed 100 million KRW. AS per the reports, Jungkook’s donation will be divided into two parts: 500 million KRW will be allocated to an emergency relief fund for those who lost their homes in the wildfires, while the remaining 500 million KRW will go toward supporting the firefighters on the front lines.
The Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association also announced that BLACKPINK’s Jennie contributed 100 million KRW to support those affected by the disaster. Her donation will reportedly go toward enhancing relief supply distribution, managing temporary shelters for displaced residents, and providing emergency aid. Meanwhile, her bandmate Jisoo donated 150 million KRW to the Korean Red Cross to further assist recovery efforts.
Additionally several NCT members including NCT’s Doyoung (100 million won), Jaemin (150 million won), Johnny( 50 million won), Jungwoo (50 million won), Haechan (50 million won), Mark (100 million won) and Jaehyun (100 million won) have recently joined the growing list of donors supporting South Korea’s wildfire relief efforts.
