South Korea Announces A 7-Day National Mourning Period To Honor The Victims Of The Jeju Air Crash

South Korea announces a seven-day national mourning period.

On December 29, hours after the tragic crash of Jeju Air at the Muan International Airport, Acting President Choi Sang Mok announced a period of week-long national mourning. According to local media reports, the announcement was made during an emergency safety meeting hours after the passenger jet crashed killing 179 of the 181 passengers on board. The mourning period will be from December 29, 2024, to midnight January 5, 2025.

In addition, the country’s Finance Ministry has announced that memorial altars will be built at the crash site and in 17 cities and provinces across the country, including South Jeolla Province and Gwangju. As a mark of respect, all public officials will wear mourning ribbons, and all ministries, local governments, and public institutions will fly flags at half-staff. The Acting President has also designated Muan as a special disaster zone, making it eligible for state support.
