Romantic genres can be quite tricky and complex since every viewer has different tastes. Rom-coms, for example, are usually hard to please as there is no action or fantasy subplot to engage the audience. However, despite combining some familiar elements into a rather interesting plot, ‘Would You Marry Me?’ has managed to win over fans.
The past few episodes have pulled in high viewership, and this week’s releases are no exception. So, here’s a quick recap of this week’s episodes.
Episode 7
The episode picks up with Woo-Joo confessing his feelings for Me-Ri, who is taken aback and begins listing all the reasons they cannot be together. Despite Me-Ri’s hesitation — likely because of the cheating affair and her failed marriage — the feelings are clearly there. She gladly accepts Woo-Joo’s offer to drive her home, and they even chat on the balcony, sharing food and jokes. Later on, due to the rainy weather, Woo-Joo spends the night at her house, and the next morning the two show up for breakfast together in matching clothes. While this was intended as an effort to show off in front of Sang-Hyun, you can still see the romance blooming between the two leads.
I have to admit, jealous Woo-Joo is one of my favorite sides of him. When Me-Ri comes across a celebrity and asks for an autograph, the little jealous expression on Woo-Joo’s face is absolutely adorable.
As they stroll through the neighborhood, they run into none other than Jin-Gyeong. Don’t blame me, but I don’t really like her character that much. Sure, she’s supposed to be part of the second couple, but the way she refuses to accept that her crush doesn’t return her feelings doesn’t sit well with me. And I still can’t believe she felt the need to interfere and try to convince Me-Ri that Woo-Joo is only acting this way because he’s grateful to her family for saving him. Thankfully, Woo-Joo chooses to go after Me-Ri.
Elsewhere, the other Woo-Ju — obviously the useless one — acts like a child and is completely annoyed when Me-Ri asks Woo-Joo to take care of him. As soon as his mother and sister arrive at the hospital, he bursts into tears and desperately begs them to help him reunite with Me-Ri.
Episode 8
Once Woo-Joo learns about the conversation between Jin-Gyeong and Me-Ri, he immediately tracks down Me-Ri’s village and goes there to confess his true feelings—once again. Surrounded by flowers and under a pink sky, our leads finally share their first kiss—well, their first official kiss that’s mutual and genuinely meant to be.
After having a heartfelt conversation in the fields and under the starry night sky, they return to Me-Ri’s home. In most K-dramas, there’s always one sweet and kind-hearted “eomma,” and in this show, that role belongs to Me-Ri’s mother. Since Woo-Joo has to spend the night at their house, she prepares his room and welcomes him with genuine warmth.
The next morning at the breakfast table, she even asks him to treat Me-Ri well and warns that she won’t tolerate her daughter being hurt again. Naturally, Woo-Joo promises that he will take great care of Me-Ri.
This particular episode captured some really warm moments between Woo-Joo and the people close to Me-Ri. For instance, from the moment Woo-Joo is greeted by Me-Ri’s family to the moment they go to pay tribute to her father, we see a lovely picture of family life.
Back in Seoul, Woo-Joo and Me-Ri are browsing through an impressive collection of kitchen cabinets at a home décor store when they are spotted by Woo-Ju’s manipulative mother and sister. After receiving a photo of Woo-Joo and Me-Ri together, Woo-Ju writes a letter in an attempt to get Woo-Joo fired. However, upon overhearing a conversation among the workers, he realizes that Woo-Joo is the heir of Myunsoondang, and storms off to a karaoke bar to vent his frustration.
Meanwhile, Woo-Joo and Me-Ri are getting all lovey-dovey in the office—secretly, of course. However, when the entire team is invited to an official lunch with Woo-Joo’s grandmother, the two start to tense up as she emphasizes the importance of honesty. On their way out, they run into Jin-Gyeong, and Me-Ri becomes a little disheartened after seeing how close Jin-Gyeong seems with Woo-Joo’s grandmother.
On the other hand, after constant nagging from his mother, Woo-Ju finally decides to file an insurance claim for his little accident. But, like in every other K-drama, the happy and lovey-dovey moments inevitably have to come to an end. When Woo-Ju shows up at Me-Ri’s doorstep and pointedly asks whether she has been enjoying this fake marriage with Woo-Joo, the tone of the show shifts, bringing in that familiar hint of angst.
Final Thoughts
Logically, the next episodes are going to be darker and perhaps even heartbreaking. But it’s a segment we can’t avoid. What might make it even harder and more intense is Woo-Joo’s uncle — the main antagonist of the show. With all his plotting and scheming to kill Woo-Joo’s parents, along with the way he and his mistress are eagerly awaiting the downfall of Woo-Joo’s grandmother, viewers will have to brace themselves for some bad news in the upcoming episodes.
