There’s nothing more brutal than the rom-com angst that sneaks up like a villain.
Rom-coms look simple and light on the surface—until they hit that segment where everything starts sliding downhill. Sometimes the pace might be easygoing and you’re cruising along with the laughs, but suddenly the mood shifts and the plot makes you shiver. One minute you’re cheering for the main couple, and the next you can’t help wanting to look away. Every K-drama rom-com has this uneasy chapter where, out of nowhere, the universe decides to pull the rug out from under the main characters. Just when we were settling into the warm fuzzies of romance between Me-Ri and Woo-joo, the heartbreaking plot twist kicked down the door.
Episode 9
As soon as Woo-Ju learns that he and Me-Ri are still married, he rushes to the townhouse with flowers, thinking that she still harbors feelings for him. However, once he learns about the scam Me-Ri and Woo-Joo carried out, he forces his way inside the house and asks her to take him back. One thing I’m really glad about is how Me-Ri refused his request and was even ready to confess her sins to the police just to escape from his trap.
Realizing that Me-Ri is serious about her love for Woo-Joo, the cunning boy changes his tactics and asks—or rather orders—Me-Ri to break up with Woo-Joo, or he will use the scam to ruin his reputation as Myunsooondang’s heir.
Consequently, during a picnic date, Me-Ri asks Woo-Joo for a breakup. Later, Woo-Joo sends her a very compassionate message, saying he apologizes for not considering her feelings and will wait for her. Honestly, I’ve got to admit, Choi Woo-shik has an incredible talent for playing green-flag characters.
While Me-Ri does everything she can to steer clear of Woo-Joo, he tries to contact her and even reaches the townhouse, to no avail. One night, Woo-Ju comes to confront Me-Ri and demands that she get back with him. Furious, Me-Ri claims that she will immediately go and report herself and the scam to Sang-hyun.
Amid the fight, Woo-Ju raises his hand and is about to hit Me-Ri when Woo-Joo emerges from behind and stops him. Personally, I’ve seen worse ‘antagonist’ characters, but I never thought that a stupid, selfish, and cheating character like Woo-Ju would actually go as far as trying to hit Me-Ri. He definitely crossed the line, and I just hope that the writers don’t opt for a redemption arc for him.
Once Woo-Joo discloses the recording he took of Woo-Ju threatening her, the latter runs off while the main couple reunites. Next, at Myunsooondang’s birthday party, Me-Ri meets Woo-Joo’s grandmother, who asks her about her relationship with her grandson. Little does Me-Ri know that Sang-hyun overheard their conversation. He then confronts Me-Ri and asks whether she and Woo-Joo are really a married couple.
Episode 10
The episode begins with a righteous act committed by none other than Jin-gyeong. Since she had previously overheard the Beaute Palace CEO’s conversation with the mayor, she used this as leverage to make a deal with Sang-hyun so that he wouldn’t go after Woo-Joo and Me-Ri.
Even though Me-Ri and Woo-Joo’s reunion is a relief to us viewers, the story takes things to a deadly new level as the antagonist—that is, Woo-Joo’s uncle—makes his move by attempting to kill Woo-Joo’s grandmother. He comes clean about his money-laundering acts as well as the fake construction news, which shocks the grandmother and ultimately sends her into a coma. After that, he ups the stakes by using the fake construction deal to frame the company. Together with Jessica—his mistress or second wife—they try to ruin the company’s image and sell it, piece by piece.
Luckily, the grandma’s secretary warns Woo-Joo about his uncle. Furthermore, with the help of Me-Ri’s sister, he realizes that Jessica could be conspiring with his uncle. As a result, they try to trap Jessica by making her believe that Woo-Joo’s grandma is out of the coma. As Jessica enters the hospital room and tries to kill the old lady, Woo-Joo and the police catch her red-handed. Since Jessica finds out that Woo-Joo’s uncle lied to her and named her as the main culprit, she agrees to help Woo-Joo as long as he protects her son.
On the other hand, Woo-Joo’s uncle sneaks into Jessica’s house and finds an old phone and a USB chip hidden in a toy—the pieces of evidence that Jessica was holding against him. As he plays a recording—the same recording that highlights his involvement in the death of Woo-Joo’s parents—he smirks and gets up to leave with the evidence. Unbeknownst to him, Woo-Joo hears the recording and confronts him about his involvement in his parents’ death.
Final Thoughts
We are down to the final two episodes, and our main couple is still somehow safe—I mean, there hasn’t been any official, big public exposure moment. I’m just wondering how the writers will handle the big reveal that viewers are waiting for. Will they use this to trigger another emotional breakup? Or will they find a way for our main couple to have a happy ending without the need to go through a heartbreaking phase?
