With two more episodes of ‘Undercover Miss Hong’ out, we’re left with just one more weekend of suspense and controlled chaos.
This weekend’s episodes mark the second to the last installment of the series, and they pack in all the necessary dynamics leading up to what promises to be a satisfying ending. With mysteries slowly unraveling over the past few episodes, these two took a more direct approach, with Hong Geum Bo finally laying her cards on the table for everyone to see.
So without further ado, let’s dive into the details!
Episode 13
This episode opens with a reunion of the Dorm 301 roommates and revelations about Miss Hong’s good deeds in previous episodes. Song Ju-ran discovers Hong Jang Mi’s cash withdrawals from domestic slush fund accounts and later confirms that “Hong Jang Mi” is actually Hong Geum Bo.
When she confronts Geum Bo, she’s left shaken. Geum Bo is no damsel in distress; once things start going her way, she becomes unstoppable with just a few carefully chosen words. In a desperate attempt to save herself, Song Ju-ran throws Shin Jeong U and DK Ventures under the bus.
Amid Song Ju-ran’s panic over the missing funds, Oh Deok Gyu sells off all his shares while the Yeouido Pirates slowly gain ground. Meanwhile, Shin Jeong U and Hong Geum Bo are overheard arguing by Kang Nora, exposing their entanglement just before her engagement to Jeong U. Faced with the fallout, Shin Jeong U ultimately breaks off the engagement.
The scenes following the broken engagement once again highlight the endearing and ever-present spirit of girlhood. Nora sneaks into the dorm, where she’s finally brought into the loop about the many ongoing plots while being comforted by Miss Hong and Miss Go.
There’s also debate between Miss Go and Miss Hong about whether Nora will be able to withdraw the international slush fund from the Swiss bank as she leaves for Switzerland the very next day under the pretense of “traveling.”
In short, this episode contains many short but crucial plot points and subplots that ultimately lay the groundwork for the final showdown.
Episode 14
This episode opens up with Shin Jeong U waiting to meet with Hong Geum Bo, the meeting that ultimately leads to him becoming another member of Yeouido Pirates. I must say, Miss Hong can be VERY persuasive and convincing, just as much as she is calculating.
With another member added to their team, Yeouido Pirates have started going on the offensive instead of playing defensive, much like Miss Hong’s approach in the last episode. They aren’t hiding anymore and have started operating openly.
The strategy of exposing Albert as the Captain, and the scene where he confessed, had my heart racing because I thought they were about to lie, and that the plan was to reveal Geum Bo as the Captain, with Albert messing things up. It wasn’t until later, when he came back and asked Miss Hong to take responsibility (that scene had me ROFL!), that I realized that this had been their plan all along.
This episode was a fantastic blend of mystery, crime, and comedy. I’m also glad there isn’t much happening in the romance department. The hints are there, but they’re subtle, and since the story is progressing well, I’ve become fairly neutral about that aspect.
By the end of the episode, I was thinking: ‘what if Chairman Kang has a heart attack after discovering all about Yeouido Pirates and their good deeds? That too manned by his own grandson?’ But alas, I was left disappointed (though I did imagine one of those dramatic, blood-spitting rage scenes from C-dramas).
Hong Geum Bo’s plan to skillfully and strategically eliminate all of Chairman Kang’s supporters is going well. With three down and three more to go, I’m looking forward to and rooting for Yeouido Pirates’ audacity, daring and cunning to win as they attempt to take over Hanmin Securities!
Final Thoughts
Overall, these two episodes felt like the perfect buildup to the finale. The way Miss Hong has stopped holding back and is now diving headfirst into the conflict is phenomenal. She’s fearlessly, yet strategically, revealing her cards and isn’t afraid of being one-upped.
The chaotic control she demonstrates makes her an excellent strategist. Despite often acting on her instincts and not always covering every possible angle (that’s the work of the newest member of Yeouido Pirates, Shin Jeong U,) her plans still have a remarkably high success rate.
One of the best aspects of these episodes was the found family trope. Multiple unrelated but like-minded individuals (both in the Yeouido Pirates and Dorm 301) have come together because of one shared connection: Hong Geum Bo. It was genuinely emotional to see how much Geum Bo has changed not only herself but also the lives of the people around her.
With the way things are going, it looks like a one-sided battle with the Yeouido Pirates clearly taking the lead. But then again, I wouldn’t put it past Chairman Kang to resort to drastic measures, as hinted in the final scenes of Episode 14 and the preview for the next episode.
It’s a bittersweet feeling knowing that the upcoming weekend will be the last with Miss Hong and her crew — but I’m also excited to witness the final act of this masterpiece of a series.
What are your thoughts and feelings about these two episodes?
