According to Korean media outlets, famed designer, Kim Rieul, passed away on the night of February 11 at the age of 32. His family later confirmed the news. The cause of his death remains unknown at this time, however, according to reports his family has requested an investigation.
His funeral took place at the 3rd Memorial Hall of Namwon Medical Center in Jeonbuk on Wednesday.
Born in 1993 in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea, Kim Rieul played a pivotal role in modernizing the Hanbok, South Korea’s traditional attire. He launched his brand, Ri-eul, in 2016, gaining industry-wide recognition for his innovative hanbok designs that blend tradition with contemporary stylistic elements such as the jacket-style Jeogori and wide-leg pants. In 2023, he was featured in the Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 list.
Kim Rieul is well known for his work with the K-pop group BTS, particularly for designing the iconic black fusion hanbok worn during their performance of ‘Idol’ at Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul. He has also collaborated with K-pop artists such as Monsta X, CLC, Zico, and Tiger JK.
While never officially trained in fashion design, Kim conceptualized his brand while planning to start a Hanbok rental business. It is evident through his actions that bringing Korean culture to the world in the form of fashion had been Kim Rieul’s lifelong goal. His quest to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity has cemented his legacy for years to come.
Our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Kim Rieul. May his soul rest in peace.
