The Japanese boy group ONE OR EIGHT has officially released their latest single, ‘DSTM,’ marking a significant moment in their career as the song samples Rihanna’s global hit ‘Don’t Stop The Music’—the first time the track has been officially reinterpreted. Infused with their signature energy and style, ONE OR EIGHT blends catchy rap, melodic hooks, and smooth hip-hop beats to give the song a fresh and contemporary twist. The production was helmed by Stargate, the legendary producer behind the original Rihanna track and a pioneering force in the R&B genre. Collaborating with young American songwriters, Stargate ensured that ‘DSTM’ maintained the essence of ‘Don’t Stop The Music’ while updating it to fit today’s musical landscape.
Accompanying the release, ONE OR EIGHT premiered an ambitious music video designed to transport viewers into a futuristic world. Set in a city where excessive technological advancements have stripped away the essence of music and art, the video follows the group as they embark on a mission to reclaim music by journeying through parallel worlds. Directed by VMA-nominated filmmaker Glenn Michael, known for his work with The Chainsmokers and The Weeknd, and edited by Mykyta Bereg, whose credits include Madonna, Tyla Yaweh, Yeat, and David Guetta, the visual spectacle is brought to life through cutting-edge effects crafted by Gianluigi Carella of Impossible Objects, whose portfolio boasts collaborations with Disney, Warner Brothers, Electronic Arts, and Nike. The fully VFX-driven production transcends the boundaries of a typical music video, offering a visually stunning and immersive experience.
ONE OR EIGHT’s momentum continues to build as they were recently honored at the MTV VMAJ with the special award for ‘Upcoming Dance & Vocal Group,’ a recognition reserved for promising new acts making waves in the dance and vocal group scene. During the event, they delivered an electrifying performance of ‘DSTM,’ leaving a lasting impression on audiences. Further cementing their status as one of the most exciting breakout acts, Nikkei Entertainment! has named them among the ‘100 New Stars of 2025.’
Reflecting on the release of ‘DSTM,’ member TSUBASA shared his thoughts, expressing both excitement and nervousness about reinterpreting such an iconic track. “I was so excited when I first heard the demo for ‘DTSM’, but was also a little nervous as Rihanna’s ‘Don’t Stop The Music’ is so iconic and loved by fans. I hope everyone who listens to this song feels inspired, just like we do, to keep pursuing their challenges, dreams, and hopes as long as ‘DSTM’ keeps playing.”
Stargate also shared insights into the collaboration, emphasizing the global unity that music fosters. “When the guys in One Or Eight wanted to do a remake of our Rihanna song Don’t Stop The Music, we were all in. They brought their own unique flavor and personality to all their parts. It was a lot of fun revisiting this song with them. The fact that One Or Eight are Japanese, Rihanna is Bajan, the hook is from Cameroon and we’re Norwegian, just shows that music really brings people together.”
The group is set to further connect with their growing international fanbase as they prepare for their upcoming ‘ONE OR EIGHT FAN MEETING: SHŪKAI’ in the United States. They will make stops in New York on April 20 and Los Angeles on April 23, giving fans a chance to experience their electrifying energy in person. With ‘DSTM’ marking a bold new chapter in their journey, ONE OR EIGHT is proving to be a force to watch in the global music scene.
