K-pop fans in India unite to counter a wave of misinformation spreading online amid the ongoing Indo-Pakistan conflict.
As tensions between India and Pakistan rise, social media has seen a surge in doctored videos, unverified claims, and misleading narratives.
In an unexpected turn of events, K-pop fans from India, alongside other Indian citizens, have mobilized in full force to tackle the misinformation surrounding recent developments in the region. They have taken it upon themselves to provide credible information.
Often seen as a niche community by other Indians, focused solely on their favorite artists, Indian K-pop fans have united to debunk false posts and share information backed by verified media sources, while also urging others to do their own independent research. From linking credible news reports to providing historical context, fans have banded together in a coordinated effort to counter fake news and propaganda. They have been sharing about the various attacks on the country and sharing details on the ongoing situation.
The fans’ efforts to tackle fake news and propaganda have been appreciated by fellow citizens, one of whom claimed, “Indian K-pop fans, I wasn’t familiar with your game,” while another commented, “Big respect to Indian BTS K-pop fans and Blackpink Fans who’ve consistently upheld India’s image on Twitter. While fandoms can be chaotic, you’ve shown maturity, unity, and global awareness. Thank you for representing us so well.”

This isn’t the first time Indian K-pop fans have rallied together for a political cause or engaged in social activism. In 2021, during the Assam-Mizoram conflict, Indian K-pop fans had come together to shed light on the situation.
Globally too, fandoms have made their presence felt in major political events. In 2020, many K-pop fans registered for and encouraged others to register for Trump’s rally and do a no-show on the day of the event. Reports from then also stated that despite the politician’s claim of about 1 million RSVPs, the venue didn’t even reach its capacity of 19,000. K-pop fans were partially credited for the low turnout at the event.
In the same year, during the Black Lives Matter movement, when racist messages and anti-BLM tweets were making the rounds, K-pop fans flooded anti-BLM hashtags like #WhiteLivesMatter with memes and posts of their favorite artists to drown out hate speech and redirect attention to the core issues. In another incident, when the Dallas Police Department asked people on Twitter to send them videos of people participating in “illegal protests” to their dedicated app, fans flooded the app with fancams of their favorite idols, causing it to crash.
K-pop fans have consistently contributed to philanthropic causes and raised their voices for meaningful change as well. In India, in 2020, BTS’ dedicated fandom, ARMY, raised over ₹5 lakhs in 24 hours for Assam flood relief. Similarly, in 2021, fans of Korean actor Lee Min Ho celebrated his 15th anniversary in the industry by raising funds for COVID-19 relief during the second wave. His fans, known as Minoz, donated to Indian actor Sonu Sood’s foundation to support those affected by the pandemic and also contributed to the World Wide Fund (WWF) in his name to plant 50 trees. Through these efforts, fans, especially in India, are proving that fandom can be a force for truth, unity, and digital responsibility.
