Music has the ability to transcend language, space, and time. Our Archives attempts to bring to you underrated artists/music that you may have never explored or have archived in your playlist, artist that we have spoken to in the past, or music we have stumbled upon. From the second in our series, we have D’allant.
Traveling in space, exploring things in the universe, and reporting unknown people based on their exploration: that’s the job D’allant has tasked themselves with.
D’allant is a duo with the concept of “Space reconnaissance patrol,” on spacewalks exploring the solar system. The duo consists of DAYE (vocals) and Pizza Fairy (guitar, bass, and drums), and all the songs are made by the duo themselves. Their music genre is based on pop and retro music of the 80s and 90s. However, they also use classical music and jazz to express broad themes that fit their cosmic worldview and always present an interesting report (music album) of their exploration.
Their concept is unique and so is their name and we were thus extremely curious about the meaning behind it. DAYE explained the meaning behind it, “Dalant is an old Korean pronunciation of ‘Talent’. In the 80-the 90s, there was a market in the church where we exchanged talents under the name of “Dalant Market,” and inspired by that, we thought it was suitable for the retro style we pursued and the word that represents our musical talent.”
We usually see people stick to the pop culture of the era they were born in, whether it’s music or movies. With both members being born in the 90s, getting inspired from and incorporating the music era of the 80s and 90s is noteworthy.
“We were very inspired by Michael Jackson. Our music is all inspired by him. Therefore, we chose to arrange and play music from the 8/90s in our style.” – DAYE
D’allant’s concept is fairly unique not just by the Korean music industry standards but by the standards of international music. We asked if they ever fear that by continuing with this concept D’allant may not be able to experiment too much and Pizza Fairy confidently stated, “We don’t know. We were just born like this.” To which DAYE added, “The universe is vast and endless. We have no fear because we think our story will never end. We just tell our stories and what we’ve discovered on our way through space.”
As a duo that produces their music, DAYE and Pizza Fairy must have different opinions at times and DAYE revealed their secret to tackling conflicts and coming to agreements, “We’re synchronized because we share the same neuron. We have never experienced conflict or difficulty. We are a space reconnaissance team that swims in space together, so there is no need to resolve conflicts with different opinions or ideas.”
The duo further spoke to us about their latest EP STAR WARS and DAYE explained the concept behind it, “The EP explains “STAR WARS”, which is the reason why we came to “COMET CITY” after passing “WORMHOLE.” The last track, Pieces of Peace, contains DAYE’s song to find a Pizza fairy because of the huge energy generated by STAR WARS. The recently released COMET CITY is music about ‘COMET CITY’, a new era and planet that we cannot know through WORMHOLE. It also contains questions about what will happen to D’allant when we arrive there.”
D’allant has been featured in Tak Jae Hoon’s The Godfather, in not one but two episodes. The show is aimed at “discovering musicians who will turn the entertainment industry upside down.” This in itself speaks volumes about how D’allant can turn the industry. We thus asked how they feel about this and their experience, to which, DAYE shared, “We made a crash landing on Earth, and especially in the Republic of Korea, and we were able to tell our story through music. We expect the Earth to be surprised by our reports of space. There are many stories to tell in the future. The Godfather’s shooting was very fun, but we’re not sure about changing the music world because we just participated in it as we were.” Pizza Fairy lightly added, “It was great. I drank with Band Nah.”
On the surface, the duo seems unique, maybe too unique for some people. We questioned what they felt was common between D’allant and other artists from Korea or K-Pop, and DAYE chimed, “K-Pop artists also care a lot about their visuals. We think our team’s strength, the visual of the pizza fairy, is cool.”
Every artist has some goal with their music and Pizza Fairy shared what D’allant wanted to achieve with their music, “The conquest of the earth.” DAYE chimed in and added, “We want to remain artists like Michael Jackson by Earth’s standards. We are artists that are known on other planets, but we still have a long way to go on Earth, so we are looking forward to the future.”
Before closing on the interview, D’allant further conveyed a message to the entire planet, “Earth, a beautiful planet. We’re truly happy and grateful to be able to communicate with you. We will continue to see various aspects of the universe, so please continue to swim with us. Please protect the Earth preciously. Thank you for your interest and love for our Space Reconnaissance Squad D’allant. We’ll continue to show you great performances.”
