Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho makes history as the first Korean filmmaker to top the North American box office with his Hollywood movie, ‘Mickey 17’!
The highly anticipated sci-fi film ‘Mickey 17’ debuted at No. 1 at the North American box office during its opening weekend.
On March 9, Hollywood media outlet Variety reported that ‘Mickey 17’ was projected to gross $19.1 million by the end of its opening weekend. Globally, the film has performed well, reaching $53.3 million in total earnings so far.
This achievement makes Bong Joon Ho the first Korean filmmaker ever to hit the top spot at the North American box office, further solidifying his international reputation following his previous successes, including ‘Parasite,’ which won multiple Academy Awards.
Outside North America, ‘Mickey 17’ earned the most in South Korea with $9 million in its first week, followed by France ($2.9 million) and the United Kingdom ($2.7 million), making them the top three markets.
‘Mickey 17’ is adapted from Ashton Edward’s novel of the same name and stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey, an ‘expendable’ worker who is cloned each time he dies for research purposes. The film also features Mark Ruffalo, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, and Toni Collette.
Congratulations to Bong Joon Ho on this historic milestone!
