Best Of 2024: 9 Stellar Debuts That Had Team NH Sit Up And Take Notice

K-Pop in 2024? A Total Banger. This year’s debuts were a delicious cocktail of talent, creativity, and boundary-pushing concepts. From groups reviving nostalgic vibes to soloists redefining artistry, 2024 saw the arrival of some unforgettable rookies to some seasoned idols stepping out on their own. Here’s a roundup of the best debuts of 2024, as handpicked by Team Namaste Hallyu.

1. TWS – ‘plot twist’

The debut track from TWS’ debut mini-album, ‘plot twist’ brings black all the high-energy vibes of 2015. It’s fresh, quirky, and impossible to ignore. Aaradhana is in complete agreement: “It brought back the fresh, energetic 2015-ish vibe to K-Pop that I had been missing for so long, especially in debuts!” Tanya added, “This song turned me into an instant fan!” The album features tracks that blend bold synths, funky rhythms, and compelling vocal hooks. The title track’s cheeky lyrics and energetic beat have set dance floors on fire. From choreography that’s bursting with personality to their undeniable stage charisma, ‘plot twist’ has everyone hooked.

2. MEOVV – ‘MEOW’

If high energy, sleek choreography, and a playful, feline-inspired concept are what you’re looking for, MEOVV delivers in spades with their debut single ‘MEOW’. Nirmiti said, “The group delivered excellent visuals, synchronized dance, and killer vocals.” Nisha praised, “They feel like a really well-prepared group, with everything from their music to dance and stage presence being top-notch, especially since they’re produced by Teddy.” MEOVV’s attention to detail—from their cat-like gestures in choreography to the mischievous Easter eggs in their music video—has captivated fans globally.

3. NCT WISH – ‘WISH’

The NCT universe finally came to an end with the debut of NCT WISH, the Japanese unit of the boy group. With their debut early this year, NCT WISH brought charm and charisma to their debut with the track ‘WISH’ which was released in both Japanese and Korean versions. Anjali gushed, “They’re adorable, and their song is just as lovable.” The track’s dreamy melody and uplifting lyrics give listeners warm fuzzies, perfectly fitting its theme of hope and togetherness. With their fresh approach and youthful energy, NCT WISH feels like a breath of fresh air in the K-Pop scene.

4. SAY MY NAME –  ‘WaveWay’

SAY MY NAME made waves—literally and figuratively—with their debut single ‘WaveWay’. The song uses waves as a metaphor for life’s challenges, expressing growth and excitement through its kitschy, playful sound. Featuring airy melodies and a subdued trap-pop groove, the song is whimsical in the best way. Ranjana said, “The girls sound great and nail the cute concept, especially the cat stuff.” Their choreography, with its charmingly intricate movements, complements the song’s vibe perfectly.

5. Big Ocean – ‘Glow’

K-Pop’s first hard-of-hearing idol group? Yes, you heard that right. Big Ocean debuted with ‘Glow,’ a remake of the 1998 H.O.T. song ‘Hope’. Komal said, “They are the first deaf idol group and seek to break misunderstandings and prejudices toward disabled people.” Eeshna added, “Big Ocean marks a special and new side of K-Pop, which is more inclusive and meaningful. They are opening doors for more artists and creators to become a part of the K-Pop world.” In an unprecedented move in the K-Pop world, Big Ocean uses Korean Sign Language (KSL), American Sign Language (ASL), and International Sign Language (ISL) to perform.

6. KATSEYE – ‘Debut’

The global girl group KATSEYE blew up with their single ‘Touch,’ but their first single, ‘Debut’ was just as good. The song has a catchy chorus that immediately hooks the listeners and its lyrics boast of self-confidence and determination, both as a group and as individuals. Priyanjana described their songs as “nice and catchy,” with visual elements that are nothing short of stunning.

7. BADVILLAIN – ‘BADVILLAIN’

If rap is your music of choice, BADVILLAIN’s debut track by the same name needs to be on your playlist. ‘BADVILLAIN’ was an explosive debut track for the girl group, full of energy and grit. Surabhi was blown away by the rappers in the group, “Their rap game is super strong and I loved that. They seem really promising!” With aggressive lyrics, haunting instruments, and hard-hitting performances, BADVILLAIN is here to rule the K-Pop world.

8. ARrC – ‘S&S (Sour and Sweet)’

ARrC made an impactful debut with ‘S&S (Sour and Sweet),’ a track that showcases their versatility and groovy style. The song is a perfect blend of strong beats and unique concepts and uses the popular tale of ‘The Fox and the Grapes’ from Aesop’s Fables and gives it its trendy and techy musical twist. Eeshna said, “Their debut ventured into varied musical styles, which is a significant move for a debut album. All their songs are catchy and groovy, which makes me wait for more content by them!” ARrC’s seamless execution and polished performances make them one of 2024’s most exciting new acts.

9. Jaehyun – ‘Smoke’

After eight years as a member of the popular boy group, NCT, Jaehyun ventured out as a soloist in 2024 with his debut studio album ‘J’. Its title track ‘Smoke,’ a mid-tempo R&B track, was a favorite with Nandini. She said, “He set himself apart from typical K-Pop solo ventures. It’s a poised entry into sophisticated contemporary R&B that prioritizes musical craftsmanship over trend-chasing. His debut has a clear artistic vision through its curation of seasoned collaborators and commitment to genre authenticity from production to vocal delivery. By leading with mature musicianship rather than high-energy singles or viral dance moments, he has established himself not just as another idol going solo, but as a serious R&B artist who’s refreshingly confident in his musical identity from day one.”

Each debut brought something fresh and exciting to the table, ensuring that K-Pop in 2024 was truly unforgettable. Who’s your pick for the best debut of the year? Let us know in the comments!
