EXO’s Baekhyun officially declared that he will be enlisting for mandatory military duty on May 6, his birthday. When it was announced that he will be fulfilling his duties as a social service worker, he began to face some backlashes for not working as an active-duty soldier. After which it was reported that he was exempted due to hypothyroidism. Adding on to the reports, Baekhyun stated through his letter that he has been suffering from hypothyroidism since his high school days and hence had issues even before and during debut.
Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland underproduces key hormones and results in a slower metabolism, fatigue, weight gain, intolerance to cold, swelling, and more. Baekhyun had also submitted his past year’s medical records and after review, Military Manpower Administration ruled that he was not ready to serve as an active-duty soldier, as he has been on medication for more than half a year. Baekhyun has also scored low grades with regard to health. He also assured his fans and asked them not to worry.
Working as a public service worker, Baekhyun will return home everyday after 6PM KST, after his three weeks of basic training. We hope that Baekhyun gets to a better condition very soon and that he safely completes his military service.
