Multi-award-winning author Amitav Ghosh has been named the 14th recipient of the Pak Kyongni Prize, South Korea’s premier international literary accolade. Ghosh, whose exploration of history, culture, and climate has earned him a global following, is the first Indian author to receive this distinguished honor.
Established in 2011 by the Toji Cultural Foundation in memory of renowned South Korean novelist Pak Kyong-ni, the prestigious prize honors “the truest writer of our time” and comes with the largest literary cash award in Korea.

The jury lauded Ghosh for his groundbreaking contributions to postcolonial and ecological literature, highlighting his ability to amplify the voices of marginalized groups, including nature itself. After a year-long deliberation involving 113 nominees, Ghosh was unanimously selected as the 2025 laureate.
Amitav Ghosh, born in Calcutta is the author of several acclaimed works, including ‘The Shadow Lines,’ ‘The Glass Palace,’ ‘The Hungry Tide,’ ‘Jungle Nama,’ ‘The Living Mountain,’ ‘Smoke and Ashes,’ and ‘Wild Fictions.’ His upcoming novel, ‘Ghost-Eye,’ is set to be released this December.
His works, translated into more than 30 languages, have garnered global recognition, earning him prestigious awards such as the Jnanpith Award and the Erasmus Prize. The Pak Kyongni Prize, one of Asia’s most respected literary honors, celebrates exceptional contributions to world literature that foster human values and cross-cultural understanding.
