Boy group A.C.E has returned with their sixth mini-album, ‘My Girl: My Choice,’ marking their first comeback in two and a half years due to the members completing their military service. A.C.E is a South Korean boy group under Beat Interactive comprising 5 members: Lee Donghun, Park Junhee, WOW, Kim Byeongkwan, and Kang Yuchan.
With ‘My Girl: My Choice,’ A.C.E delves into the concept of ‘Conatus,’ exploring the essence of existence through the narrative of a love story and dives into deeper musical themes and storytelling that resonate with their fans, ‘Choice’. Comprising seven tracks, the mini-album features previously released singles like ‘Effortless’ and ‘Angel.’ The title track, ‘My Girl,’ is a disco-pop anthem that chronicles A.C.E’s journey of self-discovery and the search for meaning in their lives. Co-written by Lee Donghun and British singer-songwriter Etham, who also contributed to ‘Effortless,’ the song was produced by Nickko Young, recognized for his collaborations with artists such as Stray Kids and Tomorrow X Together.
Additionally, the mini-album includes ‘Facetime,’ a heartfelt composition penned by WOW, capturing a boy’s emotional reflections while attempting to connect with a girl via video call. Notably, English versions of ‘Effortless,’ ‘My Girl,’ and ‘Angel’ are also part of the release.
Reflecting on their journey as a group, Junhee spoke about the biggest lesson they have learned during their hiatus, “I’ve come to appreciate the significance of small things and the value of our members. Before, we were always together, working, eating, and hardly spending any time apart. However, during the hiatus and being apart, I realized how precious those moments were. I was so happy to be back together, and I’m incredibly grateful that we can perform together again.”
A.C.E. further delved into their process for making the album and shared that the pre-recording process was really fun for this album, as their recording process took a unique approach. They shared, “We aimed to showcase A.C.E’s vocal skills, so we paid meticulous attention to details during the recording. Each of us pre-recorded a guided version of the song, and we then put them together into one. Based on this, we divided lines and proceeded with recording. This method significantly enhanced the album’s quality.” As this album has both Korean and English versions, the members shared that it was quite interesting and, in general, an opportunity for all of them to grow even more.
When asked about their experience preparing for this comeback compared to the earlier comebacks, Byeongkwan expressed, “It was unfortunate not to have Yuchan with us during the process. Additionally, our past performances were intense and left us sweating a lot. But with this comeback, I didn’t even sweat that much after we pre-recorded 2 or 3 times. It felt as if the sense of achievement was not as strong as before. Rather, I sweated while trying the challenges of other groups.”
