Acquiring a superpower sounds great, but only until you realise you can’t control it. So, what about uncontrollable or inconsistent superpowers? Self-isolation or tremendous restraint might be the only options left.
‘Take Charge of My Heart’ is a 2026 Netflix rom-com adapted from the web novel ‘Charge Me Up’ by Hae Beon. It revolves around the dilemma of a woman with inconsistent superpowers and their plausible causes and effects on a man with a failing artificial heart.

The Plot
A struggling romance screenwriter, Na Bo Bae (Chae Soo Bin), is fraught with a unique ability to produce and conduct electricity after being struck by lightning during her childhood. While her powers occasionally help with power outages, they more often pose a threat to her everyday life, leaving her unable to touch anyone without shocking them.
Cue a ruthless, meticulous, and ever-prepared third-generation chaebol heir, Baek Ho Rang (Kim Young Kwang), who hides a secret that could very well become his biggest weakness. Suffering from a long-term heart defect, Baek Ho Rang depends on an artificial heart to sustain his biological one, especially after a nearly botched replacement surgery leaves it in constant need of a charge.
Whether designed by destiny or bound by fate, Baek Ho Rang and Na Bo Bae cross paths, becoming indispensable parts of each other’s lives and eventually signing a mutually beneficial contract. The terms? She charges his heart, and he helps with the ‘romance’ for her script.
What follows is a tumultuous journey of two opposites as they navigate the myriad of conglomerate conspiracies and their complicated relationship. As a portable charger and a rubber glove, they must somehow find a way to finally meet in the middle.
The Characters
Na Bo Bae (Played by Chae Soo Bin)
An almost-30-year-old amateur romance screenwriter who has never been in a relationship herself, Na Bo Bae develops the ability to produce and control electricity after a near-fatal accident in which she is struck by lightning. Oftentimes, she intentionally isolates herself so as not to shock people who might come into contact with her bare skin.
Baek Ho Rang (Played by Kim Young Kwang)
A stoic and meticulous third-generation chaebol heir with a secret. Having to deal with a heart condition that requires him to wear an artificial heart, he walks a tightrope between proving his worthiness, defending himself against his family’s schemes, and saving his own life. A failed surgery and a coincidence make him immune to Bo Bae’s electricity, which instead helps charge his faulty heart implant.
Why This Drama Is Your Next Binge Watch

- Relationship Dynamic: The relationship dynamics between the characters feel transparent and frictionless, without any unnecessary innuendos.
- Visuals: The visual cues and cinematography, coupled with costume and design choices, background details, and light effects, play a key role in harmonising the plot and adding depth to the storytelling.
- Characters: The characters stay grounded and natural without becoming radical examples, even while leaning into the ‘unconventional’ aspects of K-drama staples.
- Wholesome Comedy: Numerous small, repeated instances and actions add a good dose of humour to the story, creating an overall wholesome atmosphere within the plot.
- Classic K-Drama Vibes: The drama is steeped in classic K-drama tropes. From clichés to the niches, it has a balanced mix of everything, from chaebols to Han River dates, featuring a very chalant pair of leads.
A Deeper Look
Even with its many K-drama rom-com clichés, ‘Take Charge of My Heart’ still makes sure to challenge conventions. Through Na Bo Bae’s life, the drama reflects present-day society. While telling a love story, it also showcases the struggles of modern-day professionals, including the physical, social, psychological, and professional stress and hurdles that may arise from highly competitive and fast-paced career markets, especially those related to the entertainment industry.
In breaking conventions, the drama also deviates from traditional ‘K-beauty standards’ without any conformative redos or redemptions. From the female lead’s curly hair and comfortable, casual clothing style to her uninhibited yet conscious speaking manner, the overall character composition makes Na Bo Bae a very relatable character. Baek Ho Rang’s lack of hesitation in expressing his emotions and intentions towards Bo Bae, while simultaneously managing not to become overbearing, also serves as an apt example of healthy masculinity.
In contrast, the drama also doesn’t really paint anyone as a ‘villain’ in the story. The choices made by the characters have a basis, substance, and a degree of realism.
The Final Verdict

‘Take Charge of My Heart’, despite being a fantastical rom-com, strikes a very natural balance between reality and fiction, making the story seem like a plausible, matter-of-fact case rather than a fairytale. With accomplished artists like Kim Young Kwang and Chae Soo Bin in the lead roles, the story comes to life with a quiet gusto, much like the slow but steady arrival of autumn, relieving the world of summer’s heat and cushioning the approaching cold of winter nights.
A woman who shuns the world from within her electric shell and a man with a dying heart. A chance encounter, and a static spark turns into a high-voltage current, bringing with it the infinitesimal charge of love and mutual understanding.
