Since the massive popularity and global love for shows like ‘Queen of Tears’ and ‘Lovely Runner’, viewers have been waiting for another outstanding K-drama they can truly obsess over. While last year brought a handful of enjoyable Korean drama releases, only a few matched the hype or impact that turned these two dramas into fan favorites. So, the big question now is whether IU and Byeon Woo-seok’s new rom-com could finally be the next big thing.

The story takes place in an alternate version of Korea, reimagined as a modern constitutional monarchy. ‘Perfect Crown’ follows a chaebol heiress (played by IU) as she enters into a contract marriage with a powerless prince. What begins as a fake arrangement or compromise soon turns into something deeper. Through the challenges they face, both characters gradually fall in love with each other.
As royalty and high business ambition collide, viewers are drawn into a world filled with electric chemistry, playful banter, and striking visuals.
The Characters
Seong Hui Ju (played by IU)

Maybe this is coming from a longtime IU fan perspective, but the first episode—or her very first appearance on screen—was enough to make her character instantly lovable.
The first episode provides several glimpses into Hui Ju’s life and the kind of world she has always had to face. Her fiercely competitive and ambitious nature becomes clear early on. It is revealed that she always surpasses her brother in business and consistently ranks at the top, even in school. Yet, despite all her achievements and talents, she is still treated as lesser because she is an illegitimate daughter. People around her choose to ignore her abilities and reduce her to that single label.
Given everything she has been through, it makes complete sense why she has built such a tough exterior. Hui Ju doesn’t hesitate to speak her mind and is always ready to stand up for herself, which makes her especially likable. The scene where she broke the glass during the royal banquet just to spite the women talking about her was particularly satisfying. Her sharp replies to her brother’s smug comments are equally satisfying.
Grand Prince Yi An (played by Byeon Woo-seok)

Although some viewers have argued that Byeon Woo-seok still feels stuck in his ‘Sun Jae’ persona and isn’t showing anything new, I think he fits the image of a tall, young, and charming grand prince perfectly.
The first two episodes depict how similar Hui Ju and Grand Prince Yi An are. Like Hui Ju, the grand prince is also a high achiever and is loved by the general public. Despite his royal image and massive popularity, many people overlook how lonely he truly is. Flashbacks to his younger years offer glimpses of how he was constantly treated and reminded not to go against the crown prince. Even when he is simply carrying out his duties or trying to support his nephew, his actions and intentions are often misunderstood, especially by the Queen Mother. Moments such as him being slapped by the Queen Mother reveal just how difficult palace life has been for him.
Queen Mother Yi Rang (played by Gong Seung-yeon)

One of the most realistic characters so far is Queen Mother Yi Rang. Her stern presence and unwavering determination to see her son become the future king are impressive. It remains to be seen whether she will cross the line and let her ambition overshadow her role as a mother, but even in the first two episodes, there are already moments that show how she forgets that her son is still just a little kid.
That flashback between her and the former king, a.k.a. her former spouse, made it quite obvious that she will likely be the show’s main antagonist. At the same time, one particular detail has caught a lot of attention: the queen’s past feelings for Grand Prince Yi An. If that turns out to be true, it could add a much more interesting and spicy layer to the overall plot.
Min Jeong Woo (played by Noh Sang-hyun)
From the first two episodes, it is perfectly clear that Jeong Woo is the show’s second male lead. He seems set to play the familiar role of someone who has quietly loved the main female lead from afar and has never found the courage to confess his feelings. Still, for some reason, he doesn’t feel entirely trustworthy. There is something about him that feels too polished, a little too innocent—especially given the fact that he is the country’s prime minister.
Perhaps, at some point in the show, jealousy over the main couple will push him to side with the antagonists.
The Deal: A Contract Marriage?
The first two episodes show how Hui Ju comes up with a clever idea. The only way she can push back against people’s cutting remarks about her and her ‘illegitimate’ label is by gaining a royal title. So, she tries to convince Grand Prince Yi An to enter into a contract marriage. Initially, the grand prince refuses and is relentlessly pursued by Hui Ju. However, by the end of the second episode, he finally accepts Hui Ju’s proposal.
What happens next, viewers can only wonder and wait, but one thing is certain: no more boring weekends!
