Review: ‘Undercover Miss Hong’- Net Full Of Lies And Deception (Episodes 5 & 6)

With Episodes 5 and 6 out, we’ve moved deeper into Miss Hong’s story, and I have questions.

These two episodes of ‘Undercover Miss Hong’ were a rollercoaster to say the least. My first thought after finishing them? Information overload. There is so much to unpack and even more to be suspicious of. My second thought? That escalated quickly.

So far, I’d say these episodes lay down the foundation and structural support the entire series is built on, like the glue holding together the story. The things revealed in these episodes and the character development (for both main and supporting characters), and the pacing were all timely. No wonder the ratings soared sky high this weekend.

So without further ado, let’s get straight into the details that were so phenomenal they propelled ‘Undercover Miss Hong’ to rank first in its time slot across South Korean networks.

Episode 5

UNDERCOVER MISS HONG EP 5

The episode opens by revealing who trashed dorm 301 at the end of Episode 4, and the culprit was definitely not who I expected. Kim Bom (played by Kim Se‑a), the daughter of 301 roommate Kim Mi‑sook, was a shocking discovery (I didn’t imagine in my wildest dreams that Mi‑sook was a mother, the 301 ladies were just as stunned).

Kim Bom’s appearance was a pleasant surprise, and just when I wondered why she was introduced, the reason hit like a curveball. Kim Bom, being the smart and sensible kid she is, she overheard Miss Hong yelling out her real name and mentioning a diary “full of pictures of old men” (that didn’t sound right but it is what it is).

While 301 was dealing with hiding the existence of Kim Bom, Hanmin Securities begins an internal audit to catch the infiltrator. The perpetrators? Nam Dong‑gi (Han Soo‑ho) and Oh Deok‑gyu. In my humble opinion, Nam Dong‑gi needs to start minding his own business, why is he always stirring trouble? He doesn’t even gain much out of it!

Meanwhile, Miss Hong attends two team dinners this week, and things don’t go as smoothly as she thought they would. During the first, she learns the real reason (or rather, the real person) behind her former supervisor’s death at her previous accounting firm.

All three initial “Yephee” candidates are now disqualified, since the ‘spy’ and ‘Yephee’ are believed to be the same person (with the exception of Miss Hong, of course). So, with these three out and the introduction of the ‘Outstanding Women Employees’ club, Chairman Kang’s secretary Song Ju‑ra (Park Mi‑hyun) is under suspicion. She clearly benefits from handling the slush funds, laundering money through club members’ accounts, and doing most of the Chairman’s dirty work (i.e. making people disappear… permanently). So why would she expose them and write her own downfall? Seems unlikely, but still suspicious.

However, Miss Hong has a new quest now: infiltrate the ‘Outstanding Women Employees’ club, gather proof of slush‑fund transfers, and hide Kim Bom’s existence from the dorm RA.

Episode 6

UNDERCOVER MISS HONG EP 6

After nearly getting caught by Song Ju-ra, Miss Hong intensifies her vigilance. A brief investigation reveals the paper trail left behind during the laundering of slush funds, and the death of one of the account holders at Ju‑ra’s command. Finding ‘Yephee’ becomes even more difficult, and rightfully so, given the ruthless circumstances.

Meanwhile, Shin Jeong‑u’s investigation reaches its conclusion, and Geum Bo’s cover is blown. At the second team dinner, she faces an all‑knowing Shin Jeong‑u and gaslights her way out as Hong Jang‑mi.

Bok‑hui seems close to uncovering the truth behind the slush funds and plans to flee with the money before her convict brother is released. But her plan fails when she connects the dots with the obituary of another club member and is then harassed by her brother who is released earlier than expected.

Final Thoughts

UNDERCOVER MISS HONG EP 5 & 6

About the questions I mentioned earlier, there are so many.

At the end of Episode 6, Geum Bo finds Albert dealing with the thug who tried to kidnap her and we’re left with a cliffhanger. The Episode 7 preview shows that there’s far more to Albert than meets the eye, and I’m sure Miss Hong would agree with me on this one.

Who exactly is ‘Yehppee’? (Albert is very suspicious to me, but Song Ju-Ra and Shin Jeong U are also on the list now).

What is Song Ju‑ra planning with the slush funds and the ‘silencing’ operations?

Bok Hee is morally grey, but will she side with Geum Bo? Or will she double cross Ju-Ra and Geum Bo to reap her own benefits?

Shin Jeong‑u isn’t making it easy to like him. Why investigate Geum Bo now, when he hasn’t done so in the years since their breakup? And why is he trying to get closer to Chairman Kang?

With barely two months left, will Miss Hong be able to finish her mission successfully?

These two episodes were dense, and I feel, no amount of words can fully capture everything that happened, or everything that went through in my mind while watching these episodes. There were wholesome slice‑of‑life moments with comedic sense, but the atmosphere still remains tense, especially with one life already lost.

What are your thoughts on these episodes?
