On January 22, a Korean news media outlet reported that ASTRO member Cha Eun Woo was investigated last year by the Seoul Regional Tax Office’s Investigation Bureau 4 on suspicion of alleged tax evasion, and that the National Tax Service subsequently notified him of an additional tax assessment exceeding 20 billion won (approximately $13.6 million) in income and related taxes.
Responding to the report, Cha Eun Woo’s agency, fantagio, issued a statement that read as follows:
“The key issue in this matter is whether the corporation established by Cha Eun Woo’s mother falls under the category of an entity subject to substantive taxation. Nothing has been finally confirmed or officially notified at this time, and we plan to actively clarify the matter in accordance with lawful procedures.
In order for the process to be concluded as swiftly as possible, the artist and his tax representative will cooperate diligently. We assure you that Cha Eun Woo will continue, as a citizen of this country, to faithfully fulfill tax filings and his legal obligations.”
Authorities reportedly questioned the structure of Cha Eun Woo’s income. Despite being represented by an agency, he was alleged to have established a separate family-owned company (Corporation A), founded by his mother, and to have entered into a service agreement between the two entities. The arrangement was reportedly used to divide his income and reduce tax liabilities.
As a result, the National Tax Service reportedly concluded that Corporation A functioned as a so-called ‘paper company’ that provided no substantive services and assessed more than 20 billion won in unpaid income tax.
Cha Eun Woo has been serving in the Army Military Band since July last year and is scheduled to be discharged on January 27, 2027.
