Global girl group KATSEYE surprised fans when they recently dropped a remix of the fan-favorite Monster High anthem ‘Fright Song’ on July 18. A collaboration with Mattel’s Monster High, the remix version adds a tinge of KATSEYE’s palette, making it a collaboration to watch. The project was novel and dynamic, with the KATSEYE members also sharing that it was a dream come true, as Monster High was an integral part of their childhood.
KATSEYE’s version of the song features several noticeable differences from the original, aiming to capture viewers with cool, edgy vibes. The track begins with an intro riff at a slower tempo, building up to a minimalist bass and drums giving a modern dark-pop and trap-pop style, followed by the line, “Ew, you give me the chills.” The song also maintains the minimalistic, spooky vibe prevalent in the original version, which was released in 2010 by Windy Wagner as a synth-pop track with a heavy guitar intro riff. The latest remix version also introduces a slow-paced, bold, and fresh rap performed by KATSEYE’s Manon and Megan. Ad-libs, like sinister laughs and breathy echoes, perfectly blend with the girls’ ethereal harmonies.
Keeping with the theme of the song, ‘Fright Song’s music video is extremely well-made and portrays the KATSEYE members alongside their alter egos, each representing a classic folktale or myth. Sophia’s is the legendary Filipino vampire-like creature, the ‘Manananggal’; Lara’s is the Asian mythical creature ‘Rakshasa’; Daniela’s is a ‘Werewolf’; Yoonchae’s is the white tiger spirit ‘Jangsanbeom’, drawn from Korean folklore; Megan’s is the Chinese fox spirit ‘Húlijīng’; and Manon’s is the sea monster ‘Mami Wata’ from African mythology.

The outfits and style of the KATSEYE members are sleek and detailed, with the girls portraying their characters as the ‘Ghoul kids’ of Monster High. The choreography is crisp and sharp, with the members primarily performing using claw-like hand movements and bold makeup, perfectly in sync with the modern Monster High vibe. The cinematography features varied camera zoom-ins and zoom-outs depending on the member’s perspective, incorporating spooky colors, haunted classrooms, eerie lighting, fog effects, and backlit silhouettes to evoke a gothic, monster-chic aesthetic. The slow-motion shots highlight the details of each member’s character, blending haunted school chills with dark glamour.
“Sinister style, mystery with a smile, you are drop-dead gorgeous; they all adore us,” sung by KATSEYE, reflects how fans admire them even with their cool, spooky theme. The chic horror concept invites us to reimagine Monster High as a place of power, mystery, and style. Overall, the song is chill, catchy, minimalistic horror, and spooky-cool all at once, perfectly emphasizing KATSEYE’s signature style in this latest collaboration.
As a fan of both Monster High and KATSEYE, this song is definitely on loop in my playlist!
