Based on the acclaimed webtoon ‘Field Mouse’ and a chilling Korean folktale that says, ‘If a mouse eats a fingernail, it becomes human,’ the series delves into a haunting narrative of stolen identity and blurred reality. It is expected to captivate viewers with its intense atmosphere and twisted storyline.
‘The Rat’ follows the unraveling life of Moon Jae, played by Ryu Jun Yeol, a reclusive novelist whose life collapses when a mysterious figure known as ‘The Rat’ steals his identity, wealth, and reputation. After his close friend, who managed his affairs, disappears and his phone’s fingerprint recognition suddenly fails, Moon Jae realizes he no longer exists in any system because the Rat has taken everything. Desperate to reclaim his life, he teams up with an unlikely ally, No Ja, played by Sul Kyung Gu, a relentless debt collector who once hounded him over an unpaid loan. Motivated by the chance to recover his money, No Ja becomes deeply involved in the case.
Ryu Jun Yeol, known for his powerful performances in ‘Believer’, ‘Revelations’, and ‘The Night Owl’, stars as Moon Jae, a reclusive writer whose internal struggles intensify as his sense of reality begins to fade. His role promises a deep and compelling portrayal of paranoia, identity, and obsession.
Sul Kyung Gu plays No Ja, a ruthless loan shark and private investigator known for his sharp instincts and determination. Renowned for his roles in ‘Kingmaker’ and ‘Hyper Knife’, Sul Kyung Gu is expected to bring depth and intensity to the complex dynamic between the two leads.
Director Kim Hong Sun, a master of genre storytelling, will helm the series. Known for his work on ‘Money Heist: Joint Economic Area’ (Parts 1 and 2), ‘Voice’, and the recent series ‘Dear Hongrang’, he is set to bring his signature dark and immersive style to this project. The script is written by Lee Jae Gon, acclaimed for crafting gripping crime dramas such as ‘Special Affairs Team TEN’ and Netflix’s ‘A Model Family’.
Production is led by Kakao Entertainment, C-JeS Studio, and H House. This marks another major collaboration on webtoon-based dramas following Kakao’s hit shows like ‘The Worst of Evil’, ‘The Call’, and ‘The Matchmakers’.
With a plot that challenges perceptions of truth and illusion, ‘The Rat’ is shaping up to be a high-stakes psychological thriller filled with suspense, mystery, and mind games, all wrapped in a distinctly Korean folklore twist.
Fans are eagerly anticipating the collaboration between Ryu Jun Yeol and Sul Kyung Gu, looking forward to the cast’s chemistry and the unfolding of the series’ intriguing story.
