In recent years, Korean filmmakers have pushed boundaries with creative, visually striking, and narratively original storytelling that seamlessly blends traditional tales and folklore with modern technology.
When it comes to science fiction and fantasy, their ability to craft compelling stories, deliver top-tier production, and create detailed world-building with layered plots and spectacular visual effects allows these films to stand confidently alongside the world’s biggest blockbusters.
1. ‘SEOBOK’

The 2021 South Korean sci-fi action thriller film, ‘SEOBOK’, deals with the philosophical quest of corporate greed, life and death, immortality, and the desire for eternal life through human cloning. Written and directed by Lee Yong Joo, and starring Park Bogum and Gong Yoo, the movie explores the possibility of immortality, the exploitation of clones, and their implications.
The story follows former agent Ki-heon (played by Gong Yoo), who lives an isolated life due to a traumatic past event, and is then re-hired by an intelligence agency to transport Seo Bok (played by Park Bo-gum), an experimental subject created through stem cell cloning and genetic engineering. During the mission, Ki-heon and Seo Bok escape an attack and form a unique bond, changing the dynamics of their lives. The perfect blend of sci-fi with themes of friendship and family not only captivates viewers but also leaves them with an appreciation of the world as they see it.
2. ‘THE WITCH: PART 1. THE SUBVERSION’Â

With its intriguing storyline, imaginative world-building, and spellbinding performances, ‘The WITCH: PART 1. THE SUBVERSION’, a 2018 South Korean sci-fi action horror film, explores themes of identity, memory, the dangers of supernatural powers, hidden abilities, and the consequences of choices made for survival. Written and directed by Park Hoon-jung and starring Kim Da-mi as a superhuman prodigy, the film examines the repercussions of reckless transhumanist experimentation.
The movie follows Ja Yoon (Kim Da-mi), a girl who escaped from a secret government facility conducting experiments on children. Rescued and raised by an elderly couple, she loses all memories of her past. Ten years later, Ja Yoon participates in an audition to support her family financially, where she reveals her telekinetic abilities—drawing the attention of the government organization from her past. The story culminates in circumstances that force Ja Yoon to decide between fleeing or confronting the dangers of her past, leaving viewers eager to see how her survival unfolds and what becomes of the transhumanist experiments.
3. ‘ALIENOID’Â

With the story of aliens, Taoist magicians, robots, and time travelers, writer-director Choi Dong-hoon delivers ‘ALIENOID’, a 2022 South Korean sci-fi action thriller period film. This alien invasion story of the 21st century, mixed with 14th-century Korean fantasy, is a two-part movie that follows a hunt for a magical crystal called the Divine Blade.
Hidden from humans for many centuries, Earth has served as a prison colony for an advanced alien race, which secretly confines humans within hosts. Guard (played by Kim Woo-bin), along with his robotic companion Thunder (voiced by Kim Dae-myung) as humanoids, captures the aliens who are hosting humans unconsciously. Armed with the crystal device, which allows time travel, Guard and Thunder rescue and raise an infant of an escaped alien and name her Lee Ahn (played by Choi Yoo-ri).
Meanwhile, in the 14th century, a clumsy Taoist wizard, Moo Reuk (played by Ryu Jun-yeol), learns about the legendary Divine Blade, which is eventually revealed to be Guard’s knife-shaped power source. On his quest to obtain it, he pairs up with a mysterious gun-wielding fighter, a woman who shoots Thunder (played by Kim Tae-ri), portrayed as the older Lee Ahn, and a host of rival seekers of the mystical power. Leaving the storyline in suspense and the viewers in anticipation, this movie of aliens, time travel, and ancient warriors—an all-in-one spectacle—is sure to be added to the watchlist.
4. ‘LUCID DREAM’

Written and directed by Kim Joon-sung, ‘LUCID DREAM’, a 2017 South Korean sci-fi mystery thriller starring Go Soo, Seol Kyung Gu, and Park Yoo Chun, explores themes of brain manipulation, human desire, and parental love. The film highlights a parent’s unbreakable resolve to fight anything and anyone for their child’s safety.
The plot revolves around a journalist named Dae-ho (Go Soo), whose son is kidnapped. With the help of his old friend So-hyeon (Kang Hye-jung), he agrees to undergo a controversial technique called lucid dreaming therapy, which allows one to enter another’s dreams. As Dae-ho becomes part of the experiment, he faces various challenges, mysteries, and unexpected twists, as the lines between dreams and reality begin to blur. The film demonstrates that when reality and dreams collide, nothing is as it seems, keeping viewers on edge until the final twist.
5. ‘SPACE SWEEPERS’Â

Packed with interstellar dogfights and androids, with Earth on the brink of disaster, director and writer Jo Sung-hee’s ‘SPACE SWEEPERS’ (2021), a South Korean sci-fi space western film starring Song Joong-ki, Kim Tae-ri, Jin Seon Kyu, and Yoo Hae-jin, aimed to propel Korean cinema to the forefront of the science fiction genre.
The movie revolves around the crew of a ship called ‘Victory’, who are always in debt. The members—Captain Jang (Kim Tae-ri), Kim Tae-ho (Song Joong-ki), Tiger Park (Jin Seon-kyu), and the android Robot Bubs (Yoo Hae-jin)—are considered the best team of space sweepers, hauling space trash while avoiding damage to space stations and satellites. The crew discovers Dorothy (Park Ye-rin), a humanoid super-weapon, who is wanted by the space government UTS, headed by James Sullivan (Richard Armitage), and a mysterious terrorist organization called the Black Foxes.
The final theme of the movie highlights how a crew of misfits, cleaning up space junk, ends up chasing the universe’s biggest secret—making it a truly worthwhile watch.Â
