The Rose‘s main vocalist Kim Woosung is going fiercely canine for his solo debut – a completely different transition from his band’s classic, rock ballad sound!

Kim Woosung from The Rose became a subject of interest with the news of his solo debut, after successfully wrapping up filming for the JTBC band survival show ‘Super Band’.

The artist’s debut mini-album was released on 25th July, 2019. It has also been revealed that Kim Woosung is indeed the face behind the album’s ideation, composition, lyric writing, arrangement and production. The mini-album consists of five tracks – title track “FACE“, “Wolf”, “Moon”, “Lonely” and an instrumental version of “Face”.

Earlier this month (July 19 at 12 PM KST), the artist surprised fans with a digital pre-release of the R&B single “Lonely“, giving us a taste of the emotional and charming sounds to come in his solo debut mini-album “Wolf“. In the lyrics Kim Woo Sung tries to embody the concept of a wolf by using elements from other cultures and is a different aesthetic from his other teaser images. Based on this, Kim Woo Sung tells a story spun over a theme of men often being called wolves, the process and the emotions that have cumulatively turned him into a wolf.

The title track “FACE” stands for the artist’s interpretation of the first impression. The song carries a simple message that everyone’s ideals about appearances should be respected. The title track is minimalistic, funk-infused rock with a sassy and sexy sound that highlights his vocals. The sophisticated visual beauty emphasizes the artist’s interpretation of the song.

The whimsical and bright music video features artists like Nana (Youngrong Kim), Bang Wuri, Seong Hakyun and Lee Minju. The music video is breaking stereotypes with close-ups of men, women, drag queens and plus size models in an effort to spread the message of gender equality. In the chorus, the line “I like your face” is a great example of this.

The music video was directed by Lee Rae Kyung, who has also worked on music videos for IU, Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon, BOL4 and more.
